MIDLAND – Ferris eagerly looked forward to the start of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament and an opportunity to face Northwood on Friday morning.
The Bulldogs got off to a strong start and held on to claim a 6-4 victory over the Timberwolves in the opening round of the tournament (an event moved from Emerson Park to Northwood University as a result of flooding in the Midland area).
Ferris grabbed a slim early lead, at 1-0 by the end of the second inning. Northwood fought back to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. Ferris answered with two runs in the bottom half of the same inning and never trailed again en route to a 6-4 win.
Pitcher Kayle Stevenson remained undefeated this season at 11-0 as she threw all seven innings, allowed 11 hits, four runs (all earned), walked one and struck out three. Offensively, Rachel Wade was 1-for-4 with a run scored and two runs driven in, Amanda Harrington batted 2-for-4 with one RBI and Rhea Flores finished 1-for-3 with a home run (her sixth of the spring).
Analysis: The Bulldogs did not have as dominating a performance as they might have preferred, but they did what they had to do to claim the win. Give Northwood credit for fighting hard, even as underdogs, and forcing the Bulldogs to have to battle a little harder to claim the win. Stevenson proved to be her usual solid self as she got the job done and held on at the end (even as Northwood attempted a late rally in the seventh).
