BIG RAPIDS – Major challenges are lurking on the near horizon for the nationally-ranked Ferris State University softball team as it prepares to make a road trip to Ohio for doubleheaders at Tiffin, on Saturday (beginning at 1 p.m.), and at Ashland, on Sunday (starting at noon).
The Bulldogs, ranked eighth in the nation in Division II and first in the Midwest region, are currently in first place at 14-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. But, Ashland is just one game back at 13-3.Saginaw Valley and Wayne State also are within striking distance of first place as we come down the stretch drive of this spring softball season.
That makes this weekend a big one. First, Ferris has a scheduled twinbill against Tiffin. The Dragons, a newcomer to the GLIAC this season, is just 5-11in the league, but has a capable team on the diamond. Ferris must be ready and can ill afford to look ahead to what will be a much-anticipated doubleheader against the Eagles on Sunday.
Pitching and defense must be sound in road games, but the Bulldogs would love nothing more than to continue to put a lot of runs on the scoreboard – particularly on the road. Hopefully Ferris can build off the road success it already has enjoyed this week in the form of a sweep of rival Grand Valley as Ferris won the regular-season series with the traditionally-strong Lakers, 4-0.
