BIG RAPIDS – Ferris, still early in this spring softball season, continues to look pretty strong among top Division II teams in the nation.
In the March 11 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Top 25 Poll, the Bulldogs were sitting in seventh. Ferris had 288 points and that was just two points in back of No. 6 Winona State. The Bulldogs actually inched up a spot from eighth in Division II (the team’s position in the previous national rankings).
Regional rankings will mean more than national rankings by the end of the season. Traditionally, regional rankings garner far more attention from administrators, coaches and players (when they are released later in the season) nationwide. But, if the Bulldogs remain prominently in the national poll then that should translate nicely in the regional rankings.
At the time of the most recent national rankings, Ferris had only played its first four games and was 4-0. Ending their Florida trip with a 12-2 mark, one of the team’s best performances ever in the Sunshine State, probably will not hurt the Bulldogs a whole lot (dependent, of course, upon what other teams in the national poll do).
