BIG RAPIDS – It’s the final week of the regular season, and Ferris knew it could not afford a hiccup on the softball diamond heading into a pair of critical doubleheaders this weekend against Saginaw Valley and Wayne State.
There were no hiccups or slipups for the nationally sixth-ranked Bulldogs as they earned a pair of five-inning victories over Lake Superior (winning 8-0 in game one and 9-1 in the nightcap) to improve to 32-6 overall and 18-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings.
In game one, freshman third baseman Makenzi Peterson had the big day as she finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, two runs scored and three runs driven in. Senior first baseman Amanda Jager was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
As a team, Ferris scored once in the third inning, three times in the fourth and four times in the fifth to seal the 8-0 victory.
In the circle, Holly Bruntjens improved to 13-5 on the season as she threw five innings and allowed just one hit and one walk with a strikeout.
In game two, the Bulldogs scored three times in the first, once in the third, twice in the fourth and three times in the third for the 9-1 win.
Rhea Flores had the big day as she finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and five runs batted in. Flores also had two home runs in the game. Amanda Harrington, Bruntjens and Lynsay Weaver each had two hits. Weaver also had a home run, scored a run and drove in three in all during the contest.
Kayle Stevenson was strong in the circle as she allowed one run on four hits to improve to 10-0 on the season.
