BIG RAPIDS – Ferris is off to one of its best starts in years, but that does not mean recruiting – building for the future – ends any time soon.
It appears head coach Keri Becker is off to a strong start with her recruiting class for the 2009-10 spring season with the recently-announced signings of four future Bulldog student-athletes. The class, at least at this point, consists of pitcher Dana Bowler, of Lockport, Ill.; Liz Hamming, a catcher prepping at Hudsonville; Elaine “Lainee” Clay, of Wheelersburg, Ohio; and outfielder Morgan Kramerich of Crest Hill, Ill.
As a side note, Bowler and Kramerich are prep teammates.
Elaine “Lainee” Clay brings the kind of versatility to the field Becker has generally sought in players to add to her program. She brings a solid bat and also possesses the ability to drive the softball and potentially be a player who can push runs across the plate. Morgan Kramerich is an athletic outfielder who also has a little bit of power to drive the softball and should be a nice addition to the Bulldogs’ roster. Finding capable players who can contribute effectively in the outfield is always critical to coaches at the college level. Coach Becker knows she has to replace some of the quality pitching that has been the backbone of her program. Ferris has strong senior pitching led by Sarah Mueller and Holly Bruntjens, who have been mainstays at Ferris for a number of years. Adding Dana Bowler is a strong start for Ferris. Helping Bowler form a battery of the future is Liz Hamming, a catcher, prepping in the Grand Rapids area at Hudsonville. Becker has been blessed to have senior Krystle Bailey as a rock of stability behind the plate during her career, but will need additional depth for the future at such an important position. It appears Becker and her coaching staff have worked hard and attracted for strong players in a good position to contribute for the future. The coaches still have to think about the future even as Ferris is off to a 12-2 start and ranked among the top NCAA Division II softball teams in the nation.
