UNIVERSITY CENTER – Even with a win under its belt, Ferris remained in the same position it was early Sunday morning: Facing elimination in the 2009 NCAA Division II Midwest Sub-Regional Softball Tournament.
In the day’s second game, Ferris had to find a way to knock off a Northern Kentucky team that handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the regional – on Friday. The Bulldogs had quite a battle, but ultimately emerged victorious, by a score of 5-1, to stay alive in the regional.
The Bulldogs had struggled, offensively, against standout NKU pitcher April Ehlers, but this time the story had a different ending. The Bulldogs brought their hitting sticks to the field in this game and emerged victorious.
Northern Kentucky’s Shatona Campbell, one of two big-time hitters for NKU (the other is third baseman Cara Parker) put the Norse up 1-0. But, that was all the lead the Norse would experience on Sunday.
Lynsay Weaver and Rachel Wade scored on an error by Ehlers, and that only got the scoring party started for Ferris in the fifth inning. In the sixth, Holly Bruntjens, Rhea Flores and Amanda Jager all earned hits to drive in Ferris runs – to blow the game wide open for the Bulldogs.
Junior pitcher Kayle Stevenson, who will be one of the key contributors returning next season for Ferris, proved brilliant as she tossed a complete-game effort to hold down the Norse for a Bulldog win.
