BIG RAPIDS – We’ve always known Ferris State University has had an outstanding softball coaching staff – one of the best in the nation – over the years.
What we have come to know has been recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Head coach Keri Becker’s 2008 coaching staff (consisting of herself, Lesa Bickley and now former assistant Chad Haberland) was named the NFCA/NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Coaching Staff of the Year in an announcement made this summer. The staff led the Bulldogs to a record of 35-18, a 2008 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional championship and an appearance in the 2008 NCAA Division II National Championships – the first for the program since the 1999 campaign.
Since that announcement, Haberland, a long-time assistant, has accepted a position as top assistant on the staff of Northwood, a Ferris rival. Bickley and Becker remain on the staff and the team has added Dawn Thompson, a former Central Michigan University softball player who was the long-time coach of the Big Rapids High School Varsity Softball Team.
The Bulldogs’ coaching staff has turned Ferris into a perennial contender in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the region and at times nationally since Becker, a three-time GLIAC Coach of the Year (1997, 2003 and 2008) became head coach.
