BIG RAPIDS – As expected, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball race is about as tight as can be at the top coming into the final week of the regular season.
The top four teams in the league all have four losses (and thus are tied in the loss column). Saginaw Valley is in first place at 18-4. Ferris and Ashland are second at 16-4 while Wayne State is next at 14-4.
The next closest team is fifth-place Grand Valley at 11-11.
It appears the top four spots are locked in and it will be a matter of sorting things out during the next seven days.
The good news for the top four teams is they are in control of their destiny from here on out – in terms of winning the regular-season title and earning the top seed in the conference tournament.
It has been no big surprise who the top four teams would be in the GLIAC this spring. That makes this next week all the more critical and exciting as Ferris must face Saginaw Valley and Wayne State in what will be enormous doubleheaders.
But, the Bulldogs can’t overlook Wednesday’s opponent, Lake Superior State. A slip against the Lakers could be costly.
