BIG RAPIDS – The Ferris State University softball team has experienced some changes in the off-season period since its outstanding run into the national tournament last spring, in 2008.
Head coach Keri Becker is back for her 12th year in the dugout for the Bulldogs. In 2009, Becker will be assisted by Lesa Bickley, now is in her seventh campaign, and the newest addition, Dawn Thompson, who is in her first season as a volunteer assistant after several years coaching Big Rapids High School’s varsity softball team. The coaching staff did, however, lose the valuable services of long-time assistant Chad Haberland, who accepted the position of top assistant coach at Northwood University, a rival school of Ferris based in Midland, his hometown.
Expect the Bulldogs to continue to benefit from an experienced coaching staff with a proven track record of success. Last spring, Ferris finished 35-18, won the 2008 NCAA Great Lakes Region championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championships in Texas, last May. Becker and Bickley continue to be mainstays in the program while Thompson has worked her way into the Bulldog family during the last calendar year and already has made a strong impact on the program.
