BIG RAPIDS – Through Wednesday, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball standings remained tight.
Ferris, Saginaw Valley and Ashland are tied at the top of the league at 18-4. Wayne State, still with some games to make up, had a record of 15-5.
Head coach Keri Becker, this week during an interview on the televised show Ferris Sports Update, talked about how tight the top of the standings in the GLIAC. As Becker pointed out, Ferris, Saginaw Valley, Ashland and Wayne all are within striking distance of the top spot.
At this point, any of the top four teams could finish anywhere from first to fourth in the conference. That can make a huge difference in a squad’s road to a GLIAC Tournament championship. In addition to the GLIAC regular-season and post-season tournament titles being on the line, teams also must be concerned about regional rankings. Ferris’ spot in the regional tournament appears solid, but the Bulldogs are taking nothing for granted entering these important weekend games.
The Bulldogs host Saginaw Valley on Saturday afternoon, beginning at 1 p.m., and then welcome Wayne State to Big Rapids on Sunday afternoon, starting at noon.
