MIDLAND – Ferris had several members of its softball team recognized by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this weekend.
The Bulldogs had six players earn spots on All-GLIAC teams as announced during the league tournament in Midland. Earning first-team all-conference honors were junior second baseman Amanda Harrington and senior utility player Holly Bruntjens. It was great to see Harrington and Bruntjens honored as both go out, punch the proverbial clock, and do good solid work. Bruntjens with her pitching, fielding and timely hitting is a jack-of-all-trades for Ferris. Harrington is the player who performs like the consummate professional at second baseman.
On the second team, Ferris was represented by junior hard-slugging designated player Rhea Flores and undefeated junior pitcher Kayle Stevenson. Flores has developed into a legitimate long-ball threat each time she steps to the plate. When pitchers make a mistake, particularly early in an at bat, there is a good chance the ball could end up over the outfield fence.
Earning honorable mention accolades were a pair of seniors in first baseman Amanda Jager and catcher Krystle Bailey. It’s nice to see the two seniors recognized by the GLIAC. Both are having solid seasons for Ferris with the bat and glove. Bailey missed a good chunk of the season after a significant injury she suffered against Northwood, but has bounced back nicely to continue to perform solidly.
Individually, with GLIAC awards, Saginaw Valley’s Marsha Beaubien was named GLIAC Player of the Year, Wayne State’s Casey Hanes was named GLIAC Pitcher of the Year, Ashland’s Emlyn was named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year and Ashland’s Sheilah Gulas was named the “Michael J. Corbett” GLIAC Coach of the Year.
