BLOG 34: Midwest Regional: Ferris vs. Lewis

FSU SoftballUNIVERSITY CENTER – Facing elimination in the 2009 NCAA Division II Midwest Sub-Regional Softball Tournament, Ferris State University came out energetic and enthusiastic.

The Bulldogs needed three wins in three tries, Sunday, to set up the possibility of facing Saginaw Valley for the right to advance to the Super Regional round. However, a team can’t afford to look too far ahead, and the Bulldogs’ focus – in the beginning – was squarely on finding a way to defeat Lewis.

First up, the Bulldogs had a date with the Flyers – a solid team from the Great Lakes Valley Conference known for sending good teams to the diamond.

From the beginning, it was evident the Bulldogs had their energy levels high and went to work against the Flyers en route to a 5-2 win on Sunday morning.

The beauty of the Lewis game was watching players up and down Ferris’ lineup make contributions to the Bulldogs’ offensive success.

Center fielder Rachel Wade and catcher Krystle Bailey got the scoring started for the Bulldogs with hits that drove in a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. Where the team had struggled before, driving in key runners on base, this time the Bulldogs did what they had to do – and did it early.

Defensively, pitcher Holly Bruntjens was superb for the Bulldogs as she threw six-plus innings before Kayle Stevenson entered the game in a relief role to shut the door on the Flyers.
