Parent Information: Directors Update - Oct 15th, 2010

Good afternoon PEAC Hockey Parents,

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving weekend and enjoyed the sunshine and great weather! This week and next week we are holding our player meetings. Each player is meeting with myself and Ms.Quinn to address their short term goals, long term goals and their action plans to ensure these goals are achieved. I’m also giving feedback regarding their progress from what I’ve seen at the rink since the beginning of school. Goalies met with Dave and Kay as well.

Students were to be prepared for these meetings by having their goal sheets with them- many did not. Please encourage your son to take their goal-setting seriously. Often, their response to setting a goal revolves around “working hard.” We are encouraging the players to use S.M.A.R.T goals: specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. I use the analogy that their current level is point A and their goals are point B. They need to create a road map to ensure they get from point A to point B. The road map is their specific goals. Talk to your son about what “working hard” means to them. Does this mean working on his lateral movements in the gym? Working on his edges? Lifting 10 more pounds than he was in September?

We will be meeting again with each player in January to follow-up with these goal setting meetings. We hope each player takes this process seriously and comes back to us having put their plan into action!

The annual U16 Gonzaga tournament is coming up on November 9th and 10th at Erin Mills Twin Rinks Arena. We were allotted a team of 20 and will be making our selections from both the Toronto and Burlington campuses. Students will be notified next week if they have been selected to represent PEAC at this tournament. These students will be expected to meet PEAC’s academic standards as a requirement for participating, as well as getting ahead on any work they will be missing during these two days. For those students not selected, we will ensure our next U16 tournament roster will include them.

A couple of brief reminders: ALL students must be wearing a PEAC practice jersey during PEAC time as of Monday October 18th. Students must have brought in their $40 deposit to have received their jersey. If they have not done so, they must before Monday. If students show up to training without their PEAC jersey, they will not be going on the ice that day. If there are extenuating circumstances please notify Ms.Quinn (dquinn@peac.ca).

Finally, a reminder that dry-land training is a mandatory component of each student’s Physical Education credit. Dry-land fitness test results and training are worth 20% of their mark. Students must be training a minimum of two times per week and logging their session in their Elite Athlete Folders. This training can be done before or after school with our trainers, or outside of school with their individual teams. If your child is not logging their sessions it will impact the grade they earn for Phys. Ed.

That’s it for now! If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Have a great weekend,

John
