Change Begins With Choice!

“Whatever you want in your life, the key to your success is to transform your thinking, emotions and behaviour!” - Patrick W. Driessen

By Patrick Driessen
A new year, a new beginning, a new start....of what? Of
CHANGE! At least, if YOU choose to change! Because you yourself have the choice to change your positive self-direction, your habits, your skills, your thinking, your emotions, your friends, your income, etc. etc. The late well-known author/speaker/mega-coach/mentor Jim Rohn has written the following wise advise about your choice to change.

Any day we wish; we can discipline ourselves to change it all! Any day we wish; we can open the book that will open our mind to new knowledge. Any day we wish; we can start a new activity. Any day we wish; we can start the process of life change. We can do it immediately, or next week, or next month, or next year.

We can also do nothing..... We can pretend rather than perform. And if the idea of having to change ourselves makes us uncomfortable, we can remain as we are. We can choose rest over labor, entertainment over education, delusion over truth, and doubt over confidence. The choices are ours to make. But while we curse the effect, we continue to nourish the cause. As Shakespeare uniquely observed, "The fault is not in the stars, but in ourselves." We created our circumstances by our past choices. We have both the ability and the responsibility to make better choices beginning today. Those who are in search of the good life do not need more answers or more time to think things over to reach better conclusions. They need the truth. They need the whole truth. And they need nothing but the truth!

We cannot allow our errors in judgment, repeated every day, to lead us down the wrong path. We must keep coming back to those basics that make the biggest difference in how our life works out. And then we must make the very choices that will bring life, happiness, success and joy into our daily lives.

And if I may be so bold to offer my last piece of advice for someone seeking and needing to make changes in their life - If you don't like how things are, change it! You're not a tree!

YOU have the ability to TOTALLY transform EVERY area in YOUR life - and it all begins with your very own POWER of CHOICE!

Make this a Positive & Fruitful Day... unless you have other plans!

Thanks, warm regards & success with your change process,

Patrick

It's Time For Reflection

"By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest." - Confucius

By Patrick Driessen
The year 2009 is almost over. This year has been very challenging, included many unexpected turns, and various steep ups and downs for most of us. For me it also has been an exceptional, exciting and rewarding year, in which I have achieved a lot, built new relationships with some great people, have gotten to know myself a bit better, learned many new things and had lots of fun with many friends, family, team members, clients and business partners. A special and sincere thanks to all whom supported and helped me to succeed and have fun this year!

Looking ahead to a new year is always inspiring. Thinking of new ideas, setting new goals and stretching your creative mind on what to do differently, will give you a lot of positive energy! Now before you look ahead, the challenge is to first look back and reflect on the things you have done, experienced, learned and achieved.

If you sit down with pen and paper and spend some quality time on (self)reflection, it will allow you to deepen your learning’s and optimize your goal setting and planning when you look ahead at the new year. To help you stretch your mind, below are some questions you can ask yourself. I’m sure you can think of many more, allowing you to write down some very useful learning’s and conclusions.
  • What are the 3 key achievements of this past year? What did it allow you to do and what did you learn from it?
  • Who are the people who provided you with the best support, most fun and most love? How can you strengthen your valuable relationship with them?
  • Who are the people you have learned most of? How can you learn more from them and how can you build new relationships with more people like them?
  • Which people had a negative impact on you and/or the people close to you? How can you avoid them in the future?
  • Which goals had you set for 2009? Which ones did you achieve? What was the impact on you? What did you learn from it?
  • Which goals for 2009 didn’t you achieve? Why not? What can you do differently to achieve these in 2010?
  • What kind of new skills have you developed at work and how did you improve your personal unique value proposition? How can you utilize this value to improve your career next year?
  • What was the best book you have read and which learning’s and insights did you take from it?
  • What did you do to improve your health and well-being? What can you do to further improve it?
  • What was the best investment you have made? What kind of unique value did it give to you?
  • Which new things or skills did you think of to further develop? What do you need to succeed in doing so?
  • What kind of legacy will you leave behind this year?
  • What were the 3 worst experiences this past year and how can you prevent these from happening in the future?
  • What is the single one thing you can change as of today, which will have a positive impact on all the other things you do and want to achieve?
  • ....
  • ....
Have fun and enjoy your self-reflection exercise! It’s very rewarding to do and allows you to close off the year with a rich feeling and a sharp look ahead!

From the tropical & sunny island of Langkawi (Malaysia), I would like to wish you all a very positive, fruitful, healthy, entrepreneurial, creative and inspiring new year in which you’ll all succeed in many ways!

The 7 Disciplines for High Performance

“Over-seriousness is a warning sign for mediocrity and bureaucratic thinking. People who are seriously committed to mastery and high performance are secure enough to lighten up!" - Michael J. Gelb

By Brian Tracy

There are seven disciplines you must develop if you want to achieve all that is possible for you. You can learn these disciplines through practice and repetition until they become automatic.

1. Goal Setting

Every morning, take three to five minutes to write out your top goals in the present tense. Get a spiral notebook for this purpose. By writing out your ten goals at the beginning of each day, you will program them deep into your subconscious mind.

This daily goal writing will activate your mental powers. It will stimulate your mind and make you more alert. Throughout the day, you will see opportunities and possibilities to move more rapidly toward your goals.

2. Planning & Organizing

Take a few minutes, preferably the night before, to plan out every activity of the coming day. Always work from a list. Always think on paper. This is one of the most powerful and important disciplines of all for high performance.
Remember: "A Goal Without a Plan is Only a Dream…" If you dream of achieving great things in life, planning for making them a reality on paper is vital to your success!

3. Priority Setting

The essence of all time management, personal management, and life management is contained in your ability to set the proper priorities on the use of your time. This is essential for high performance.

4. Concentration on your Highest-Value Activities
Your ability to work single-mindedly on your most important task will contribute as much to your success as any other discipline you can develop.

5. Exercise & Proper Nutrition

Your health is more important than anything else. By disciplining yourself to exercise regularly and to eat carefully, you will promote the highest possible levels of health and fitness throughout your life.

6. Learning and Growth

Your mind is like a muscle. If you don't use it, you lose it. Continuous learning is the minimum requirement for success in any field.

7. Time for Important People in your Life

Relationships are everything. Be sure that in climbing the ladder of success, you do not find it leaning against the wrong building. Build time for your relationships into every day, no matter how busy you get.

Action Exercise

These 7 disciplines will ensure that you perform at the highest level and get the greatest satisfaction and results from everything you do. Study these 7 disciplines and then make a plan for how you can incorporate each of them into your daily life! It will help you to succeed faster and better!

“It is an immutable law in business that words are words, explanations are explanations, promises are promises but only performance is reality!” - Harold S. Geneen

How To Overcome Your Procrastination

"Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task!" - William James

As many of my 'Helping You Succeed!' blog readers emailed me about their 'fear for success', 'fear for taking action' and many other procrastination causes, which prevents them from becoming more successful, below you'll find some good insights and guidelines to help you overcome your procrastination (written by Marty Nemko). Success guaranteed!

First of all you'll need to become aware of the reason(s) why you procrastinate. These could be one or several of the following causes:
  • Hedonism: Some people feel they have the right to always choose more pleasurable over less pleasurable experiences. Solution: Realize that your life's worth is what you've produced. That's true whether you're a dishwasher or a doctor. That often requires choosing less pleasant tasks.
  • Fear of failure: Many people know, from previous experience, they'll find tasks odious and will often do them poorly. Solutions: Get a less demanding job, exchange tasks with a coworker, get help on projects, get training, avoid perfectionism--especially on first drafts.
  • Dependency: Whether you're a trust fund baby, welfare or unemployment recipient, stay-at-home-parent, or have parents who'll always bail you out, dependency can demotivate you. Solutions: Fend for yourself--give away your money if necessary. And remind yourself that you don't want to be a parasite on this earth: you are worthy to the extent only that you've been productive, having had a positive impact on those around you globally and/or locally.
  • External locus of control: You place too much responsibility for your success on external forces, for example, God, racism, or spirituality ("the universe will provide" and similar nonsense.) Solution: Yes, not everything is in your control--luck plays a role--but success lies mainly within you, sometimes with assistance from others you trust.
  • Lack of drive: Some people are lucky enough to be born with high drive, others not. Solutions: If you're not, it may help to find a partner or a cause you deeply believe in. Sometimes, having a spouse and/or a child can add drive.

A Cure for Procrastinating
Here’s a cure for those who are sick and tired of being told; “If only you applied yourself, you could accomplish so much!:

1. Make top-of-mind that you really are squandering your life. Your life’s meaning is significantly determined by how much you’ve given to the world. And as everyone’s been telling you ad nauseum, you have so much potential to do that. Decide, finally, that every time you opt to forgo productivity in favor of a brain teaser or party, you’re probably wasting life’s most precious resource: TIME!

2. Set a big goal. Goethe said, “Dream no small dreams because they have no power to move people’s hearts.” So, what’s the biggest, most exciting goal you could potentially achieve if you put your mind to it? Even if you’re not sure you could achieve it, might getting partway there is good enough?

Can’t think of a big, exciting goal? Here are common fantasy careers: owning a cool business, being a celebrity, being in the fashion, sports, computer games, or film industry, directing or starting a non-profit, holding political office, holding a status job like architect, lawyer, or executive.

Already in a career? What’s the biggest contribution you could make to your field? Most people don’t have the intellectual firepower to make a big contribution, but you’re a Mensan. You do.

3. Picture the benefits of achieving your goal. Money? Fame? Self-esteem? A more meaningful life? Get your spouse off your back? Increased happiness? More meaningful relationships?

4. Is fear making you procrastinate? If so, what would your wiser twin say in response to your fear? For example, if you’re afraid of failing, your wiser twin might say, “If the goal is really too difficult, change it or get the skills you need so it’s not too difficult.” Or, “Is it wiser to not attempt your goal at all, which guarantees failure? Would the price of failure be so great as to justify your not trying it?”

5. Consider getting a collaborator. Procrastinators often feel guilty about slacking if they have a partner to be accountable to.

6. Be aware of the moment of truth: that moment, when you, usually unconsciously decide whether you should take that next baby step toward your goal or see what event you should next attend? By making the choice consciously, you’ll more often choose the productive activity.

7. Break the project into baby steps. Don’t know how? Get help from a close friend, family member, coach or mentor.

8. When you’re stuck, struggle for no more than one minute. Generally, if you haven’t made progress in a minute, chances are that additional struggling won’t help. It will merely make you want to procrastinate more!

9. DON'T put it on your To-Do List. Conventional wisdom says to put all your tasks on a to-do list and then prioritize the list. I've found that for many tasks, you're wiser to just do the task: you save the time it takes to put the task on your list; you avoid adding to the many tasks hanging over your head like Poe's pendulum in the pit; doing it now tends to make you not be overly perfectionistic about it; most important, you avoid procrastination: you've gotten it done! So instead of the guilt, you'll start hearing, "Wow. Thanks for the fast response!" That feels so good!

10. A one-paragraph procrastination treatment. When you're tempted to procrastinate, there's a moment of truth when you're still able to resist, like when you're just starting to lose your temper. At that moment, you can still restrain yourself.
How to restrain yourself from procrastinating? At the moment of truth, ask yourself, "What's my next one-minute task?" If you can't figure out what it is or how to do it, ponder for just one minute. If you're still clueless, get help or decide that the problem isn't important enough to worry about.

11. Procrastination Excuses. Do you use any of these bogus excuses to justify procrastinating?
  • I'll feel more like doing it tomorrow. --> Think back to previous times you've used that excuse. Did you feel more like doing it the next day?
  • After I do X (for example, clean my desk), I'll do the task. --> Again, think back. Did delaying the task make things easier?
  • I'm afraid of failing. --> Not trying ensures failure! Winners increase their chances of success by dividing tasks into bite-sized pieces and getting help where needed.

What can you do today?
When tempted to procrastinate, first congratulate yourself on catching yourself making an excuse. Then do your next few-second task. Expect it to feel uncomfortable. Do it anyway. It will get better! It will help you to succeed faster and better!

"The two rules of procrastination: 1) Do it today. 2) Tomorrow will be today tomorrow!" - Author Unknown

Life Lessons

By Patrick Driessen

"One thing is clear to me. You can't know everything you'd like to know. You can't do everything you'd like to do. You can't read everything you'd like to read. You must hold onto some things and let go of others. Learning to make that choice is one of the big lessons of this life.” - Real Life Preacher

“Never be afraid to laugh at yourself, after all, you could be missing out on the joke of the century!” - Dame Edna Everage

Based on some recent questions I have received from a few close friends about what my best life lessons are, I've been stretching my own thinking about my best life lessons. Can You Afford NOT To Invest In A Coach And Mentor?

By Patrick Driessen & Nancy Adler

Can you afford NOT to invest in a Coach and Mentor? My guess is that if things were going absolutely wonderfully for you in your professional and personal life, you would probably not be reading this article.

Consider the fact that almost all highly successful people have a Coach and Mentor from which to garner guidance and support in so many different ways. Below is a list of just a few of those highly valuable assets that a Coach and Mentor can offer by advicing, counseling and coaching you.

It is of immeasurable value to have someone that allows you to learn from their mistakes. We can learn one of two ways; from our own mistakes or from the mistakes of others. Having a Coach and Mentor that has been there and done that and who is willing to share their errors so they do not have to be repeated is worth the investment in a Coach and Mentor in and of itself.

The polar opposite of learning from a Coach and Mentor’s mistakes, of course, is learning from their successes. Shortening up the learning curve and learning from their expertise saves time. And time is money. Save yourself some effort by not having to reinvent the wheel.

A Coach and Mentor serves as a strong accountability partner. Like a good friend that will tell you what you need to hear which is not always what you may want to hear. Ultimately, the goal is to hold ourselves accountable. Taking responsibility for one’s own success is most important to long term achievement of our goals and aspirations.

A Coach and Mentor is a strong leader and will let you know what their expectations are of you.

A strong Coach and Mentor assists in setting realistic and achievable goals based on your desires. At the same time, a Coach and Mentor will build on existing strengths, unwrap hidden potential and ask that you stretch to reach your full potential! Stretching and changing can cause some short term pain and your Coach and Mentor will be the first to let you know that. The expression no pain, no gain certainly applies here.

It is a valuable asset to have someone in your corner to share your vision and validate your goals. There is value also in having a Coach and Mentor by your side to offer another way of looking at things. Another point of view can be valuable to remove one from their entrenched thinking.

Coaching Issues
Most people turn to their coach for help on time management as well as career guidance and business advice. To a lesser but still significant extent, they seek coaching on relationships, family, wellness and spirituality. Coaching clients, who could select as many choices as were applicable, said they work with their coach on the following issues:
  • Time management: 80%
  • Career: 74%
  • Business: 73%
  • Relationships/Family: 58%
  • Physical/Wellness: 52%
