A young PEAC Piranha’s hockey team showed nice class and great effort this past weekend. The Piranha’s started the tournament with dominating victories. PEAC defeated College Brebeuf from Quebec 8-2 with strong performances by Wilson Scott and Jack Crawford. Griffin Coutts earned the victory between the pipes. The Piranhas then faced a gritty Sterling Hall School, PEAC came out strong on the Olympic ice and earned a decisive 7-0 victory with Taylor Jackson, Jasper Forgrave, and Mariah Hinds playing well. PEAC then faced a crucial third game versus the Appleby College Bulldogs. The Piranha’s should nice grit and hustle versus the older and more physical Bulldogs team, PEAC could not capitalize on their opportunities and lost the game 3-0 to a solid Appleby squad.
PEAC Piranhas draw up a play during a late timeout in semi final action versus UCC
The loss would mean that PEAC would face the UCC grade 8 team in the semi-final early Saturday morning. Serena D’Angelo would earn the start for the Piranha’s in the semi and would put together one of the best goaltending performances in the history of the PEAC elementary school hockey program. Tied at zeros early in the 3rd period, UCC finally beat D’Angelo on a rebound goal scored by Reilly of the UCC Blues. PEAC would not quit…with their back against the wall, the Piranha’s kept the pressure on, Mario Ferraro, Dom Comisso, and Logan Bray took the play to the more experienced Blues squad. It was Reagan O’Grady of the Piranha’s who would knot this game at one with 2 minutes to go in regulation. O”Grady the shifty d-man pick up the puck behind his net, going coast to coast, O”Grady pulled the puck wide, when released a quick shot beating the goalie glove side ringing off the back bar tying the game at ones and the underdog Piranha’s could smell the upset. Regulation time would settle nothing. The teams lined up and would play 4 on 4 extra time to decide a winner. The best overtime chance came off a 2 on 1, springing the PEAC Russian forward Politov, Daniel broke to the left wing and let a snap shot go that hit the goalie in the shoulder and barely missed the top corner. The resulting rush was an off man rush the other way for the Blues, The 40th UCC shot of the game was gathered by D’Angelo but the rebound somehow found an open UCC player at the corner of the net, after failing to clear the puck it slide into the PEAC goal and the Blues would go onto face the Bulldogs of Appleby in the championship game. Both teams left everything on the ice and all fans that attended the game were impressed with the pace and class should by both squads.
