Boys' Hockey Update - November 16th, 2010
Good afternoon PEAC Hockey Parents,
It has been an exciting week for Boys Hockey – we took home our 3rd consecutive championship win at the Gonzaga Invitational Tournament. Day One of the tournament featured PEAC dominance of the competition and an impressive showcase of skills for many of PEAC’s high performance athletes. Game one was a good test for the U16 Piranha’s who were getting together for the first time this season, game MVP Connor McDavid was a standout, bringing the crowd to their feet, netting a great backhand goal off some high end manoeuvres around the defenders. PEAC beat the Bishop Allen Cardinals easily 8-2, with Stone Denbok earning the victory between the pipes. Game Two saw PEAC face-off against the host school the Gonzaga Bulldogs. David Miller, the game MVP was exceptional up front for PEAC. PEAC won the game 7-3, with Darren Smith getting the win in goal. PEAC was a perfect 2-0 heading into their afternoon game against Aquinas. PEAC came out of the gates flat and found themselves up only 3-1 after two periods. Late in the third, the lead was cut to one goal, when Angelo Nitsopoulos took a lead pass off the right wing and snipped home his second of the game putting PEAC up 4-2, which would end up being the final score. Angelo was awarded the MVP of this game for his efforts; Jesse Michel was the winning goalie.
After a convincing win against Campion in the semi-finals, for the third year in a row our boys faced St. Michael’s College. Our boys made us proud with Jordan Subban taking a strong role back on defence and Joshua Ho-Sang, Bryson Cianfrone, Jimmy Lodge, Angelo Nitsopoulos and David Miller leading our offensive force. St.Michael’s did a great job of holding us at bay but in the end proved to be no match with goalie, Darren Smith, making some amazing saves. The final score was for PEAC 4-1. Bryson Cianfrone was the game and tournament MVP. Congratulations!
This week a group of our U16 players will tour the University of Michigan. These students will have the chance to speak to academic advisors, get a tour of the university, meet with coaches Mel Pearson and Billy Powers, watch Lake Superior State practice, and attend the Friday night game University of Michigan versus Lake Superior State. This is an exciting opportunity for this group and offers them a chance to experience a Divison I NCAA school and network with coaches and staff.
Our Grade 6 and 7s will have the opportunity to compete in the Upper Canada College U14 Invitational on December 3rd and 4th. We are the returning champs and hope to have the same success this year. A permission form will be sent out later today.
Student Achievements: Pol Gonzalez left this week to attend a training camp in Romania for Spain’s U20 National team. Pol will be competing for Spain in the U20 tournament in Hungary from December 13-19th. We are very proud and wish him the best with his training and competitions. Robert Polesello and Team Canada East were out competing in the World Junior ‘A’ Challenge in Penticton, BC from November 8th-14th. Team Canada East beat Switzerland 4-2in the semi-finals and moved on to play Team USA for the gold medal. After having a 3 goal lead, Team Canada East couldn’t stop Team USA from rallying back and ended with a score of 6-4 and taking home the silver on Sunday. Rob had 2 points in the tournament with one goal and one assist. Congratulations to Rob with all his accomplishments!
This clearly has been a week PEAC can be proud of! Well done to all of our competing players.
John
