Stoogery

I don't believe I've posted this before...I always meant to, but don't recall ever getting around to it. It's goofy, but I dig it...it was for the Las Vegas Weekly for a story detailing all the stereotypical yet realistic characters one sees on a visit to the city, reimagined as the Three Stooges. There's the Buffet Scout, seldom seen without a big styrofoam plate full of food; Uncle Vegas, a scholarly type always dropping facts about the city's history; and the Bouncer Wangler, keeping everyone "secure".

Washington used a first-inning grand-slam homer from pitcher Danielle Lawrie and some late insurance runs to defeat Georgia by a score of 9-3 in tonight's late game. The win gives U-Dub a spot in the best-of-three championship series against Florida starting Monday (Georgia had defeated Washington earlier today, 9-8 in nine innings, to force tonight's rematch). The Huskies thus claimed "top dog" status over Georgia on their side of the bracket.

Florida got a two-out grand-slam homer from Ali Gardiner in the bottom of the seventh to edge Alabama 6-5. The Crimson Tide made a strong recovery in the tournament after looking "not ready for prime time" in an opening-round loss to Michigan. But, as a result of tonight's heartbreaking loss to the Gators, Bama is now eliminated.

Lowrie's and Gardiner's grand-slams are among four that have been hit so far in this World Series.

Saturday, May 30, 2009

With today's action now complete, we're down to four teams -- and three of them are from the SEC. Sunday's schedule is as follows:

*Washington will face Georgia at 1:00 Eastern. If the Huskies win, they advance to the championship series. If the Bulldogs win, the teams will have a decisive rematch at 7:00 Eastern.

*Florida and Alabama will play at 3:00 Eastern. A win by the Gators will put them in the championship round, whereas a Tide win will force a rematch at 9:00 Eastern.

Here is a summary of Saturday's results...

Evening Session

Alabama eliminated its second Arizona-based opponent of the day, defeating ASU, 6-2, in the nightcap. A fourth-inning grand-slam by Jazlyn Lunceford was the big blow for the Crimson Tide.

Georgia sent Michigan back home to Ann Arbor, by a 7-5 score. The star of the game had to be the Bulldogs' Taylor Schlopy, who homered twice -- solo in the first, a three-run job in the second.

Afternoon Session

Alabama drubbed Arizona, 14-0, in a run-rule game, thus eliminating the Wildcats.

In today's opener, Georgia knocked off Missouri, 5-2. The Tigers were thus the first team to be excused from the Women's College World Series.

Stanley Cup and Cheesecake 2009 - Finals Edition

Here we are again. Penguins vs. Red Wings, round two. Boy, when I think back about how confident I was at the start of last year's finals, it's almost embarrassing. This year, I'm confident again, but in a much more measured, cautious and realistic way. Much as it goes with the teams involved themselves, you gotta learn to lose before you can learn to win. Suffice to say, this series will be analyzed and broken down by people much more qualified and knowledgeable than me, so I'll stick with what I do best: Gut reactions and homeresque logic. I think the Pens have learned all there is to know about losing, and that they're now poised to learn a thing or two about winning. Hell yes I believe.

Obsessed

My most recent strip over at Richmond Magazine tells the story of my rabid obsession with the Penguins. None of this will come as a shock to the readers of this blog, however!

All Quiet

It's been pretty quiet on the blog lately, which sure as hell doesn't reflect what's been going on with my workload! Unfortunately, all my time recently has been spent working up designs and concept art for clients that may never see the light of day, and on commissions that I can't post and spoil before they're given as gifts. Curses!

I'm working on my Stanley Cup Finals preview and will post it tomorrow morning, but for now here are a couple of recent Savage Love illos, which are still running in Philly and Detroit.

♥ Proses Pasang BEHEL

Alhamdulillah pemasangan behel udah dijalani.
Alhamdulillah gue gak ngerasa sakit apapunn.. prosesnya cepet.
pertama-tama gue di bersihin dulu karang giginya..
terus gigi kelinci depan gue kan ada yg patah & bengkok sedikit, yg itu di tambal ama dokternya biar rataa gigi gue.
abis itu mulai deh dipasangin kawat, tadinya gue mau yg warna baby pink cuman tipe behel gue kan yg crystal safire jadi kawatnya dasarnya bahan transparan, soo gue ganti warna yg shocking pink aja supaya 'keliatan' warnanya. hehee. xD

pokoknya gue bersyukur bgt prosesnya gak sakit sama sekali, dari awal sampai akhir aman.
sariawan juga Alhamdulillah sama sekali gak ada.
tapi proses pemasangan behel buat gigi bawah gue bisanya minggu depan karena pas dibersihin karang giginya gigi gue meradang.. darah kga berhenti2. jadi musti nunggu seminggu.

Actions 4 Happiness

By Patrick Driessen

"The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet." - James Openheim

After I published my blog post about What Makes You Really Happy? I received many responses from people who informed me it was a real eye-opener for them and in many cases they had concluded they were after things which would NOT make them happy…. I also received a lot of requests for additional guidance on how to become happier and more successful.

Below you’ll find a broad overview of actions which you can take to increase your own happiness. Success guaranteed! You can’t go wrong with any of these and I’m sure they’ll help you to become more successful and happier in each and every area of your life!

  • Have Meaningful Goals
People who strive for something significant, whether it’s learning a new craft or raising moral children, are far happier than those who don’t have strong dreams or aspirations. As humans, we require a sense of meaning to thrive. Happiness lies at the intersection between pleasure and meaning. Whether at work or at home, the goal is to engage in activities that are both personally significant and enjoyable. Click here for guidance to help you decide what you want. Click here to help you with dreaming and goal setting.
  • Build Valuable Relationships
Now more then ever we can really claim “It’s a small world”, because thanks to new technology and social media networks, it has become fairly easy to build relationships with other people around the globe. As long as you make sure you turn your new relationships in valuable relationships, they’ll make you happier! Click here for more information on how to use social media to expand your network.
  • Smile Even When You Don’t Feel Like It
It sounds simple, but it works. Happy people…see possibilities, opportunities, and success. When they think of the future, they are optimistic, and when they review the past, they tend to savor the high points. Even if you weren’t born looking at the glass as half-full, with practice, a positive outlook can become a habit. Click here to learn more about smiling.
  • Say Thank You Like You Mean It
People who keep gratitude journals on a weekly basis are healthier, more optimistic, and more likely to make progress toward achieving personal goals. People who write “gratitude letters or emails” to someone who made a difference in their lives score higher on happiness, and lower on depression, and… the effect lasts for weeks!
  • Maintain Your Brain
Our brain is where all our experiences, learning’s, emotions, etc. are being turned into….HAPPINESS! The better the condition of your brain, the larger its capacity to turn your emotions and experiences into happiness! Daily intake of apple juice, almonds, whole wheat, Omega3 (fish oil), vitamin-B Complex, enough sleep and various brain exercises will all help to boost your brain power. Click here for more info on how to maintain your brain.
  • Savor Everyday Moments
Pause now and then to smell a rose or watch children at play. Study participants who took time to “savor” ordinary events that they normally hurried through, or to think back on pleasant moments from their day, showed significant increases in happiness and reductions in depression.
  • Avoid Comparisons
Comparing ourselves with others can be damaging to happiness and self-esteem. Instead of comparing ourselves to others, focusing on our own personal achievement leads to greater satisfaction.

  • Bake Your Own Bread
Satisfying, rewarding, healthy and easy to do: bake your own bread. With your own bread machine you can wake up every morning with the smell of fresh baked bread, which makes you happy and will make you smile. Click here for information on how to do it.
  • Put Money Low on the List
People who put money high on their priority list are more at risk for depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem, according to various studies. Research findings hold true across nations and cultures. The more we seek satisfactions in material goods, the less we find them there! The satisfaction has a short half-life; it’s very fleeting. Money-seekers also score lower on tests of vitality and self-actualization.
  • Coach Your Own Health
People who successfully manage the health of their body and mind are more balanced, more successful and happier! A combination of the right nutrition and liquid intake, exercise, relaxation, and regular health checks will result in the best possible and happiest health. To learn more about how to coach your own health, click here.
  • Take Initiative at Work
How happy you are at work depends in part on how much initiative you take! When we express creativity, help others, suggest improvements, or do additional tasks on the job, we make our work more rewarding and feel more in control.
  • Make Friends and Treasure Family
Happier people tend to have good families, close friends, and supportive relationships. But it’s not enough to be the life of the party if you’re surrounded by shallow acquaintances. We don’t just need relationships, we need close ones that involve understanding and caring.
  • Make Love!
Yes, it’s no surprise that lovemaking boosts your happiness levels!
  • Get Out and Exercise
A Duke University study shows that exercise may be just as effective as drugs in treating depression, without all the side effects and expense. Other research shows that in addition to health benefits, regular exercise offers a sense of accomplishment and opportunity for social interaction, releases feel-good endorphins, and boosts self-esteem!
  • Give Hugs
Hugs stimulate oxytocin, the “love hormone”; spreading a feel-good boost.
  • Keep a Gratitude Journal
Writing about what you are thankful for both helps retrain your brain to be more optimistic and positively impacts your health!
  • Give It Away, Give It Away Now
Make altruism and giving part of your life, and be purposeful about it. Helping a neighbour, volunteering, or donating goods and services results in a “helper’s high,” and you get more health benefits than you would from exercise or quitting smoking. Listening to a friend, passing on your skills, celebrating others’ successes, and forgiveness also contribute to happiness. Those who spend money on others create much greater happiness than those who spend it on themselves! For example: Spending time on teaching, coaching, mentoring and guiding others to succeed is most rewarding and satisfying and really makes you happy!
If you follow these proven 'Actions 4 Happiness', I am sure it will also enable you to become more successful, increase your happiness and enhance the quality and quantity of your life!
A good question to ask yourself is: will having more success make you happy, will being happy make you more successful, is it both or somewhere in the middle? For you to find out!

"Often people attempt to live their lives backwards; they try to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want, so they will be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse. You must first be who you really are, then do what you need to do, in order to have what you want." - Margaret Young

Online educational empowerment: Binshan Lin and John Vassar at the Louisiana State University, suggest that online learning communities have many benefits because they offer learners social networks to effectively and easily acquire and share knowledge among themselves. However, key to success, they have found is individual self-governance! Self-governance, or personal empowerment, can be measured in terms of self-efficacy, perceived behavioral control and personal outcome expectations regarding the interactions between learners and the online technology.
Online communities, and the internet more broadly speaking, extend the notion of personal empowerment that has emerged in health, welfare and now education. This paradigm shift in access to information means that today learners can, for example, educate themselves with minimal interaction from a higher power or traditional teacher. "In accepting this philosophy, an instructor may become the 'guide on the side' rather than the 'sage on the stage'," the researchers say. No. 1 seeded Florida closed out the first day at the NCAA Women's College World Series by shutting out Arizona, 3-0. The Gator win prevents the SEC from going winless on the day, while also halting what had been a perfect day by Pac 10 teams.

Florida will next meet Michigan, who defeated Alabama, 6-1. The Gator-Wolverine battle will be Friday night 9:00 Eastern on ESPN.

The two other winning teams from today, Arizona State and Washington, will play Friday night at 7:00 Eastern on ESPN 2. ASU got out to a fast 6-0 lead against Mizzou in Thursday afternoon action, and coasted to a 7-3 victory. Washington took the opener, 3-1 over Georgia.

The teams that lost today will have until Saturday to regroup, before beginning play in the losers' bracket of this double-elimination event.

Relax!

By Patrick Driessen

"If a man insisted always on being serious, and never allowed himself a bit of fun and relaxation, he would go mad or become unstable without knowing it." - Herodotus (484 BC - 430 BC)

If you are tying to succeed in turning your dreams into goals, and your goals into strategies and actions, you’ll be asking a lot of energy from your body and mind. Hence why a focus on your health and your overall wellbeing are critical success factors to succeed on the short and long term.

To get the best out of yourself it's important to relax your body & mind regularly. Relaxing things like listening to music, watching TV, reading a book, yoga, gardening, sports, meditation, music meditation and sleeping all help to relax and revitalise your body and mind. However; except for sleeping, these relaxation forms all do require some kind of activity…so you still might not fully relax.

An often forgotten or under-estimated form of relaxation which does fully relax you is massage! Now there are many forms of massage. I can personally mainly recommend the traditional Thai massage or similar massage methodologies, because these have a dual function: relaxing & revitalising (fixing) body and mind. With a lot of regular relaxing massages you’ll feel relaxed, but your soar muscles and bones do not get enough attention… The traditional Thai massage is based on the belief that all disease is due to an imbalance of the body's energy. The ultimate goal of the Thai massage is to promote this balance and therefore assist in the healing of the entire person.

The benefits of Thai massage include those of a regular massage, like improved circulation, mobility and flexibility, as well as stress relief. Thai massage offers a lot of additional benefits; its more specialized techniques will help promote balance of all the body's systems; deep relaxation, warmed and stretched muscles, healing energy flow, greater flexibility, increased and focused energy levels, prevention of injury, relief from sore and aching muscles and joints, detoxification, and a feeling of confidence and well-being.

It’s the perfect preparation for performance intensive events or any kind of physical or mental test. It helps one focus energy and attention on the task at hand and it’s highly therapeutic for those in pain from tension, injury, or illness! Success guaranteed!

The challenge is where to find the best Thai massage specialist near you. One who offers a relaxed ending and NOT a happy ending…(for men only...). I’ve found it very challenging to find the best quality in traditional Thai massages. My advise: search the web, look on forums, ask around, make phone calls, ask how long they’ve been in business for and raise other questions to validate their quality standards before you make an appointment. A good quality example is my preferred address in Sydney: The Royal Thai Touch. Highly recommended if you're in Sydney!
In most large cities around the world the investment for a one hour traditional Thai massage will be between $60-$80. Depending in which country you live and what kind of health insurance you have, you can expense up to 100% at your health insurer!

"No matter how much pressure you feel at work, if you could find ways to relax for at least five minutes every hour, you'd be more productive." - Dr. Joyce Brothers

Create Your Positive Attitude!

"Life is too short to spend your precious time trying to convince a person who wants to live in gloom and doom otherwise. Give lifting that person your best shot, but don't hang around long enough for his or her bad attitude to pull you down. Instead, surround yourself with optimistic people!" - Zig Ziglar

By Mark Victor Hansen
Creating a positive attitude to achieve positive results!
Your attitude determines the state of world you live in. It is the foundation for every success and every failure you have had and will have. Your attitude will make you or break you.
Attitude creates the way you feel about people and situations. Your actions are a result of your attitude, which, in turn, creates a reaction from others. So, basically, what you think ... you get. It is your attitude toward others and the Universe that determines the resultant attitude toward you. Incorporate a positive, joyful attitude and you'll have positive, joyful results. Put out a bad, negative attitude and you've failed before you begin. I know it sounds simple, but the truth is....it IS simple!

Where do negative attitudes come from in the first place?
Negative attitudes come from thinking negative thoughts over and over until they have become a part of your subconscious - they've become habitual, a part of your personality. You may not even realize you have a negative attitude because it's been with you for so long. Once you have a bad attitude, you expect failure and disaster. This expectation turns you into a strong magnet for failure and disaster. Then it becomes a vicious circle. You expect the worst - you get the worst - your negative beliefs are reinforced - you expect the worst - you get ... . . Got the picture?

So, how do we shift our thoughts and create a positive attitude?
It takes work, but creating anything of value takes work. In order to have a new attitude we have to change our subconscious thinking. How do we do this? By analyzing every thought we have until positive thinking becomes habit. You're merely replacing an old habit with a healthy habit, much like replacing exercise for smoking.

You can't just stop being negative - you have to replace those negative thoughts with positive ones. Some people would say, "But negative situations are a reality. They just show up in every day life." This is absolutely NOT true! Situations are a reality, yes. They do show up.

It is your ATTITUDE that makes a situation positive or negative! It's time for you to realize that YOU are in control of how you think and feel - no one else on earth has this power unless you give it away. Take control of your attitude, and you take control of your results. Your state of mind creates the state of your results!

"YOU are the ONLY ONE who can use YOUR ability. It is an AWESOME responsibility!" - Zig Ziglar

Make this a Positive & Fruitful Day....unless you have other plans!

Warm regards & success,

With the start of the NCAA Women's College World Series just two days away, readers may be interested in how the teams in the WCWS field fared against each other during the regular season. As per my annual custom, I've created the diagram below...

Florida and Washington really seemed to go the extra mile to schedule a tough nationally based schedule, and each did very well against this competition. Michigan, to a lesser degree, showed national ambition, but didn't do quite as well.

Georgia and Arizona State will really have to turn things around, in terms of their performance against nationally elite teams, if they're to have any chance in the World Series.

Finally, there's Missouri, who did not play any games during the regular season against any of the other seven (eventual) World Series teams. Mizzou will be an unknown entity to the other seven teams (at least in terms of direct playing experience), and the other teams will be unknown entities to Mizzou. To whose benefit will this accrue?

Horse and Pony Pull Competitions

The Horse and Pony Pull is a traditional Fair favorite! Ponies and Large draft horse teams, bred for their strength and agility, compete to see who can pull the heaviest load. The best horses in competition are worked every day to keep their muscles and tendons in top shape for pulling. Teams will be weighted to determine light or heavy weight class. During the pull, teams must stay within the boundary lines or they will be disqualified. Cash prizes are awarded to teams that place in the top 9 places! $500 goes to 1st Place in Horse Pull, and $350 to 1st Place in Pony Pull. Call NDSF at 852-FAIR and ask for a registration form or download a registration form Here.

Two teams joined the WCWS field earlier today, Florida and Washington. The Gators swept a pair of tight, low-scoring contests from Cal, whereas the Huskies picked up an easy win over Georgia Tech to close out their series.

Bold, Mostly Baseless and Almost Certainly Pointless Western Conference Prediction

The Nuggets will beat the Lakers. The Finals will be Cleveland v. Denver. I say this as I sit on my couch, five minutes into the first quarter of the third game of a tied Lakers-Nuggets series. After Denver has just missed three easy layups.

I could be wrong.

A long day of softball is now over. With Missouri upsetting UCLA, 2-1, here's the Super-Regional Board at the conclusion of Saturday's play...

The opening of the Florida-Cal super-regional series in Gainesville was rained out, so play will begin Sunday.

Defending NCAA champion Arizona State will be returning to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, having routed North Dakota State in a game that was out of reach very quickly.

Michigan will be making its first trip back to the World Series since 2005, when the Wolverines won it all. With a 7-1 win over Baylor this afternoon, Michigan ends a three-year streak of losing in the super-regionals. The Wolverines will now head down to Oklahoma City having won 26 of their last 27 games.

Alabama has eliminated Jacksonville State to advance to the WCWS. The Crimson Tide's Kelsi Dunne pitched no-hit ball throughout the super-regional -- a pair of five-inning run-rule games.

Washington won its opener against Georgia Tech.

Arizona has just completed a second straight win over Stanford tonight, sending the Wildcats to the NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City. In the finale, the Cardinal closed a 6-2 deficit to 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth, but went quietly in the seventh. Here is how my Super-Regional Board now looks at the conclusion of Friday's action.

Georgia became the first team to "punch its ticket" to the World Series with a win over Ohio State.

Meanwhile, Alabama, Arizona State, and Michigan have taken 1-0 series leads over their respective opponents. Dorian Shaw had a spectacular night for the Wolverines, belting three homers!

Here is how my "Super-Regional Board" looks at the end of Thursday night's play.

Indeed, tonight's winners are Georgia (over Ohio State) and Stanford (over Arizona). As coincidence would have it, both games were decided by a score of 6-4.

As I noted in my introduction earlier today, there are eight "super" series, each two-out-of-three games. In any given super-regional, the teams will play a single game on the first day, then one or two on the second day (depending on whether a third and deciding game is necessary). The ESPN family of television networks (ESPN, ESPN 2, and ESPN U) will be showing the games. Alternatively, you can watch games on your computer via the free broadcasts on ESPN 360. You can also visit the team pages for the participating schools (asterisked) in the links section to the right.
