There’s probably not a story in recent times that has hit more hot buttons for me than the story of DPD Officer Robert Powell and his treatment of Ryan Moats in a traffic stop outside the hospital where Moats’s mother-in-law was dying upstairs. Obviously, there are very few if any allies in Powell’s corner right now and rightly so, I believe. But it’s made me think about a few things and why this story hit me so hard personally.

First off, it made me realize how differently I think of things as a young white girl. I think about what I would have done if I were Moats or his wife and I found myself in that situation. Would I even be as likely to be in the situation in the first place being a young white girl? That’s pure speculation on my part but I tend to think I wouldn’t. But even if I was, my brain immediately tells me that I would explain hastily (as the Moats indeed tried to do) that my mother was upstairs taking what were going to be her final breaths and that I had to get upstairs. If for some reason the officer wanted to argue with me about that, he would have to do so as he ran to catch up with me because I would simply take off. It’s my mom and you’d have to Taser me into a smoking pile of obscenities before you stop me from getting to her bedside.

But that’s because I am not of an ethnicity which has faced being shot 41 times by a police officer simply for producing a wallet to supply an ID as was requested by the officer. I am not of an ethnicity which just a few months ago faced having a young man being shot in the back at point blank range and killed while other officers held him down in an Oakland BART transit station. Rodney King was not a young white girl. So what would happen to me if I did run? Clearly Ryan Moats could probably run faster than me but between his respect for the law and fear of disobeying an officer, he didn’t get to his mother-in-law’s hospital room in time. And that both earns he and his wife tremendous respect in my book and breaks my heart.

But the other thing it reminds me of is how many bad examples of the kind of people that go into public safety for all the wrong reasons I have seen in my life compared with the depressingly small number of examples of people who are actually in the game to protect and serve I can recall. I need to preface everything with this: I have some personal connections to law enforcement which gave me, from a very early age, a very grim view of how police departments and cops in general operate. In fact, one of the reasons why I can’t sit through The Wire is a credit to its realism. It might be gritty and wonderful and fascinating to watch for an hour each week if you are an adult but it’s terrifying and depressing and dehumanizing to witness that mentality as a child.

But back to the sort of people who go into this line of work. There’s a Pollyanna deep inside of me that wants to believe that the numbers are not the way I see them to be and that my vision is slightly if not terribly askew. The cops that I have met and known in my life who were good cops were doing their job to help people and to keep them safe. They make me happy. But how many of you have had a run in with or know of the cop who is a cop because of the power trip that they get from that position of power? Whether it was just a traffic stop that went on far too long for a broken taillight or it’s that bully from high school who you find out is one of the boys in blue now, it seems to be a job that is incredibly alluring to a certain type of character. Officer Powell seems to fit this profile. I’m sure he will not mind me profiling him as it seems to be a practice he wholeheartedly endorses.

Many cops that I have known have, after a few years, developed what I consider to be an incredibly dangerous mentality especially considering the whole point of their job. They develop an “us and them” mentality. I don’t mean “cops vs. criminals” or “good guys vs. bad guys”. I mean “cops vs. everyone else” and when I mention this to other people who have family members who are police, they immediately know what I am talking about. There is a kind of secret society/fraternal order that is understandable amongst people who risk their lives every day and never know who could be waiting to shoot them behind a door. But when that attitude carries over into everyone behind the wheel of a car, everyone crossing the street, everyone walking their dog it becomes dangerous. When I was a child, I actually heard a cop who was a family friend allude to this and say something along the lines of “we have to keep the public safe because they’re all too fucking stupid to take care of themselves.”

Now, Darwin Award winners aside, that’s the kind of attitude that terrifies me. That’s not Norman Rockwell’s officer helping a freckle faced child find a puppy. Hell, that’s not even the chuckling officer on Cops asking the cracked-out tranny hooker why she’s wearing two different wigs. That is the cop who thinks he’s God. And that’s the kind of cop who thinks he can “screw over” someone who is clearly (with hospital employees and Plano Police officers corroborating his story) in a hurry to get to the bedside of his dying relative.

I respect anyone who puts their lives at risk every day. And like I said, I want to genuinely believe that the bullies, racists and small men getting off on power trips are the exceptions and not the rule. I would not want to be a cop so I’m glad someone does. But this whole incident has made me remember how apprehensive I am about the ego and power that sometimes is packed tightly into that uniform.

The Power of Love!

By Patrick Driessen

"One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life: That word is love.” - Sophocles (496 BC – 406 BC)

For me life is all about working with people, helping people succeed, taking care of people, leading people, coaching people and having action, pleasure & fun with lots of people. So…. I really love people! Love has many facets and as some of you might know I always love to say: "Never underestimate the power of love!"

Below a couple of sides of love I'd like to explain and highlight.
When judgment is replaced with passion and love, most people tend to make different decisions than they otherwise would! If you are in a relationship with someone special you most often have deep love feelings for that person, even though you sensed that there were major differences between you two. Somehow you thought that these differences weren't important or that they would change along the way... Then you realised, that maybe things weren't as great as you thought... That realisation and the possible following break-up were tough in each and every way. It badly hurts. It seems as though love always hurts…. In fact; love does not hurt but it is the falling out of love or not having love that really hurts; there's a gap, you really miss something! And the higher you are, such as in the heights of passion or the tower of a long-term love, the harder the fall….. A break-up, divorce, death, or abandonment are some of the most painful experiences of life because we miss our love so much!

In my humble view we all need two things in life: 1.) Not be alone or feel alone, and 2.) Be appreciated and loved for whom we are! Love brings us together and loneliness reminds us that we are missing something in life. You may not even understand it, but the forces are there. We primarily seek fulfilment in the love of others, when we often need to love ourselves just as much, or even more.... You most likely will agree with me that giving yourself the power to love yourself even more, is often a tough challenge! However; being passionate and loving others starts with loving yourself and by being honest to yourself!

"Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all." - Michael Masser & Linda Creed

There’s another side of love, which is often forgotten or neglected: love at work/in business (and no, I do not mean falling in love at work!). Love in our day to day (work) lives can be shown or communicated by giving someone an acknowledgement, a compliment, a special kind of surprise, a sincere reward, a sincere smile or just by giving a loving and appreciative handshake. Just go and do it! I'm sure you'll love it and the receiving person(s) will appreciate and love it as well!

I had my moment of truth when I received several acknowledgements from a group of colleagues during a training course. On one side I really felt uncomfortable and I believe my face never turned so red before…., on the other side it simply felt great! I was overwhelmed by it, but I loved it! All the acknowledgements made me shine, it made me grow and glow, it gave me lots of energy and….I now have very special and positive memories of the moment and of the colleagues who gave me these positive acknowledgements! My lesson learned: Life's too short not to show your love or appreciation to someone or something! - by Patrick Driessen

"Love is the passionate and abiding desire on the part of two or more people to produce together conditions under which each can be, and spontaneously express, his real self: to produce together an intellectual soil and an emotional climate in which each can flourish, far superior to what either could achieve alone." - From "Apples of Gold" - un-attributed quote

Ding-Dong

This is from a story in The Stranger last fall, about how those Mormon kids come to your door and want to talk to you about their beliefs. Not passing judgement here, but I gotta say I've never met even one single person who enjoys having religious prostelitizers come to their door.

Health Checks

By Patrick Driessen

Did you know that each hour in each civilised country, at least five to fifty men die from conditions that are potentially preventable (that's 120 to 1200 lost men per country per day)? Or that men live on average six years less than women?

According to the Australian Medical Association, many men treat their health as a low priority while they juggle the competing demands of work and family life. Apparently, men often adopt a “functional view” of their bodies. Only when their work, play or exercise is below par, they understand there may be a problem. Another fact is that most men stop visiting doctors regularly between the age of 20 and 45. By the time the begin visiting GP’s again, their ailments are more chronic in nature!

Prevention and early detection are key! To prevent and mitigate risks of obesity, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, etc., there is a thing you can do: an annual men’s health check! This is the best advice I can give you, as it will most certainly help you to maintain and protect your own health.

According to my own Sydney based men’s health specialist Dr. Rob King, the main objectives of a men’s health check/assessment are:

  • To improve and maintain your wellbeing in the short and long term.
  • To ensure you maintain your physical independence in the long term.
  • To prevent the onset of disease, including cancer.
  • To detect disease early, including cancer.
A complete men’s health check should cover the detection and prevention of:
  • Nutritional imbalances.
  • Excess body weight.
  • Disease of your heart and arteries (cardiovascular disease - build-up of plaque in your arteries).
  • High blood pressure (hypertension).
  • Abnormal blood fats (dyslipidaemia).
  • Abnormal blood sugar (insulin resistance/pre-diabetes/diabetes).
  • Prostate problems.
  • Weak bones (osteoporosis), calcium and vitamin D deficiencies.
  • Screening for cancer, in particular skin, testicles, prostate, bowel.
  • Sexual difficulties, in particular erection and ejaculation problems (optional).
  • Sexually transmitted infections (optional).
  • Immunisations.

Most large medical centres offer health checks and there are specialized men's (and womens) health check centres in most large cities around the world. They'll do a full health check and provide you with advise on how to improve your health. It will all be on a strictly confidential basis!
A men’s health check will take you at least 1 to 2 hours and will cost approx. $300-$600 of which you can claim a large part from your health insurance. A lot of employers do have agreements in place with external health and wellbeing providers, so just ask internally if your employer can arrange and fund your annual health check.
To find a men’s health check specialist near you, just Google “men’s health check” with your location to find a specialised centre near you.

Health checks women should have

There are many screening tests and examinations that healthy women can undertake to help with detection of diseases such as cancer. Your General Practitioner (doctor) is well placed to carry out some of these tests, refer you to have other tests, or to advise you on some of the self-checks you can be doing to monitor your own health. For a complete overview of womens health check recommendations for the general population and for women with specific risk factors for a particular disease, please click here.

Please do yourself a big favour and schedule a health check appointment on the short term. It is one of the best health investments you can make!

Make your health your TOP priority! You can't buy your health or life back after years of neglecting it while you earn your living!

Keep Dreaming!

By Patrick Driessen

"If you can dream it and believe in it, you can do and achieve anything you need!" - Patrick Driessen

You can dream of anything.... you can have unrealistic dreams, realistic dreams, daydreams, fantasy dreams, romantic dreams, etc., etc. as long as you dare to dream, you can dream big! And if you can dream about compelling and challenging things, you can start turning these dreams into goals. The next step is to make these dreams and goals come true; by defining your dream and by planning strategies & actions to get there. Than you can start executing these actions with focus, passion and dedication!

I have proven to myself that this methodology works: wetter dreaming of certain relationships, major achievements, skills, assets or a specific state of mind; if you can dream it and believe in it, you can make it happen!

As an inspirational example; looking at these beautiful sailing yachts (http://tinyurl.com/cpsl26), stimulates me to dream of owning one of them one day and to sail around the best places in the world with my best friends & family on board. It will happen! I believe in it!

Principles for Financial Success

In these times of economic down turn and headwind, more financial risks can develop and can have an impact on your personal wealth. On the other hand these times also offer great opportunities to financially gain and become even more successful!

"Do yourself a favour and master the art of money. Treat it as an honored guest in your life, one who will quickly flee if you do not treat her well, but one who will stay and enrich your life beyond measure if you treat her with care and respect." - Philip E. Humbert

Two Principles for Financial Success
There are two great principles for achieving financial success. The first Principle is what we call the Law of Attraction. The law of attraction says that you are a living magnet. It says that your thoughts create a force field of energy that radiates out from you and attracts back into your life people and circumstances in harmony with them. Any thought you have, combined with an emotion, positive or negative, radiates out from you and attracts back into your life the people, circumstances, ideas and opportunities consistent with it.

The Law of Attraction: How to attract the success you desire.

Many people feel that this is perhaps the most important of all mental laws. It says that if you have a very clear idea in your mind of your desired goal, to become wealthy, and you can hold that idea in your mind on a continuing basis, you will inevitably draw into your life the resources that you need in order to achieve it. Every person who has become wealthy or successful has become wealthy and successful as a result of holding the idea of wealth and success in their mind long enough and hard enough, until they drew into their lives the resources they needed to accomplish it.

Your world reflects your thoughts

The second principle is called the Law of Correspondence. This mental law is very powerful. It says, "as within, so without." It says that your outer world is like a mirror that reflects back to you what is going on in your inner world. And this law of correspondence says that everything that happens outside of you corresponds to something that's going on inside of you. When we say that your outer world is a reflection of your inner world, we mean both at a conscious and at a subconscious level.

Visualize your goals clearly

If you consciously believe that you have the ability to achieve your goals and you can hold a picture of those goals clearly in your mind long enough and hard enough, eventually your outer world will correspond with it.

Three reflections of success

There are three places where we see this law of correspondence. First of all, your outer world of people will correspond exactly with your own attitude. You will always see your attitude reflected back to you in the faces and the behaviours of the people around you. If you have a positive, optimistic attitude, people will respond to you almost immediately, even before you open your mouth, in a positive and cheerful way.

Relationships show you who you are

The second area where we see the law of correspondence is in your relationships. Your relationships will always mirror back to you exactly the kind of a person you are. When you are happy and optimistic and at peace, your relationships will be happy and harmonious and loving. But when your thinking is disrupted or negative for any reason, consciously or unconsciously, this will be immediately reflected in your relationships.

Inner and outer wealth

The third place you see the law of correspondence is with regard to your wealth. Your external world of wealth and financial accomplishment will be a mirror image of your inner world of preparation. The only part of the equation that you can control is your conscious thoughts, and if you can keep your conscious thoughts on what you want, on your images of wealth and affluence, eventually your external world of reality and experiences will reflect it back to you.

Action exercises

Here are two things you can do to apply these principles in your financial life:
  • First, guard your thoughts carefully. Whatever you think about, combined with the emotions of desire or fear, you will attract into your life. Be sure that you are attracting what you want by continuing to think only about what you want.
  • Second, keep feeding your mind with new information, ideas and pictures of the person you want to be and the life you want to live. By creating this inner attitude of mind, you change the outer aspects of your reality. by Brian Tracy

Boost Your Brain Power!

If you are focused on improving your health and overal condition, do you currently include your brain in your health program? If not, you better give your brain some extra attention and maintenance, because that will most certainly result in boosting your own brain power!

How? It's no secret that long-term diet and nutrition choices have an effect on the way we look and feel; various studies show that nutrition, exercise and relaxation can also affect the way we think. As it turns out, there really is such a thing as “food for thought” and "brain fitness". Below are 15 different things you can begin doing as soon as today to start your brain power boost!

1. Eat Almonds
Almond is believed to improve memory. If a combination of almond oil and milk is taken together before going to bed or after getting up at morning, it strengthens our memory power. Almond milk is prepared by crushing the almonds without the outer cover and adding water and sugar to it.

2. Drink Apple Juice
Research from the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) indicates that apple juice increases the production of the essential neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain, resulting in an increased memory power! Just leave your softdrink and take this healthy apple juice instead.

3. Sleep well
Research indicates that the long-term memory is consolidated during sleep by replaying the images of the experiences of the day. These repeated playbacks program the subconscious mind to store these images and other related information.

4. Enjoy simple pleasures
Stress drains our brainpower! A stress-ridden mind consumes much of our memory resources to leave us with a feeble mind. Make a habit to engage yourself in few simple pleasures everyday to dissolve stress from your mind. Some of these simple pleasures are good for your mind, body and soul. A few examples:

  • Enjoy music you love
  • Read a good book
  • Play with your children
  • Hug a stranger
  • Appreciate others
  • Do a good deed every day
  • Run, bike or swim
  • Take a yoga class or fitness routine, etc.

5. Fast for a day
Fasting cleans and detoxifies our body. It is known fact that heavy food not only causes stress on our digestive system but also drains our brainpower. Fasting relieves toxic emotions such as anger, grief, worry, and fears - before they accumulate and cause disease. By cleansing toxic emotions, fasting strengthens metal clarity with increases memory, concentration, creativity and insight.

6. Exercise your mind
Just as physical exercise is essential for a strong body, mental exercise is equally essential for a sharp and agile mind! Have you noticed that children have far superior brainpower than an adult does? Children have playful minds. A playful mind exhibits superior memory power. Engage in some of the activities that require your mind to remain active and playful.
  • Play scrabble, a crossword puzzle or online brain games
  • Volunteer
  • Interact with others
  • Working out at the 'Brain Gym'
  • Start a new hobby such as blogging, reading, painting, writing
  • Learn a new skill or a language, etc.
  • Or try some exercises designed to test your mental fitness:
Brain Trivia Crossword Puzzle: Test your knowledge
Origami Brain: Make a brain model out of paper
Cool Brain Trick: See hidden 3D images
Brain Aerobics: Test your memory and attention skills
    Speed: Brain response to sounds.

7. Practice Yoga or Meditation
Yoga or Meditation relives stress. Stress is a known memory buster. With less stress, lower blood pressure, slower respiration, slower metabolism, and released muscle tension follows. All of these factors contribute significantly towards increases in our brainpower.

8. Reduce Sugar intake
Sugar is a non-food. It’s a form of carbohydrate that offers illusionary energy, only to cause a downhill slump once the initial burst has been worn off. Excess intake of sugar results in neurotic symptoms. Excess sugar is known to cause claustrophobia, memory loss and other neurotic disorders. Eat food without adding sugar. Stay away from sweet drinks or excess consumption of caffeine with sugar.

9. Eat whole wheat
The whole wheat germs contain lecithin. Lecithin helps ease the problem of the hardening of the arteries, which often impairs brain functioning.

10. Eat a light meal in the night
A heavy meal at night causes tossing and turning and a prolonged emotional stress while at sleep. It’s wise to eat heavy meal during the day when our body is in motion to consume the heavy in-take. Eating a light meal with some fruits allows us to sleep well. A good night sleep strengthens our brainpower!

11. Develop imagination
Greeks mastered the principle of imagination and association to memorize everything. This technique requires one to develop a vivid and colorful imagination that can be linked to a known object. If you involve all your senses - touching, feeling, smelling, hearing and seeing in the imagination process, you can remember greater details of the event.

12. Sex
Our sexual imagination often empowers our ability to daydream, which strengthens our brainpower with greater imagination, visualization and association! You just need more sensual and passionate daydreaming...

13. Control your temper
Bleached food, excess of starch or excess of white bread can lead to nerve grating effect. This results in a violent and some time depressive behavior. Eat fresh vegetables. Drink lots of water and meditate or practice yoga to relieve these toxic emotions of temper and violent mood swings.

14. Take Vitamin B-complex
Vitamin B-complex strengthens memory power. Eat food and vegetables high in Vitamin B-complex. Stay away from the starch food or white bread, which depletes the Vitamin B-complex necessary for a healthy mind.

15. Take Omega-3
Just like a machine, your brain needs oil - in the form of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids - to run smoothly. Unfortunately, the average diet doesn't usually contain the right balance of these fatty acids. If you eat a typical modern diet, you probably get plenty of omega-6 through corn, soybean, and other oils in processed food. But omega-3 oils, which are just as important, are often missing.
The omega-3 fatty acid is an important ingredient for optimal brain function. Earl Mindell, RPh PhD, writes in Earl Mindell's Supplement Bible, “There's a reason why fish is known as brain food. It is a rich source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a fatty acid that is found in high concentration in the gray matter of the brain. DHA is instrumental in the function of brain cell membranes, which are important for the transmission of brain signals.” By making cell membranes more fluid, Omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, improve communication between the brain cells, according to Mind Boosters author Dr. Ray Sahelia. As a result, lack of omega-3 in the body can cause a communication breakdown in the brain, which is probably the last place you'd want such a breakdown to happen.

These 15 tips are easy to follow up and execute so you can rapidly boost your brain power as of now! This will allow you to become more balanced, and use your increased brain power to do and achieve anything you need to succeed!

Learn From Failure & Confirm with Success!

"There is only one journey. Going inside yourself" - Rainer Maria Rilke

"You always pass failure on the way to success." - Mickey Rooney

Most people think that failure is bad and success is good. I want to help you change your thinking about that if you fall into that category. I will give you that failure isn't fun and success is, but I think the following is true: Both failure and success are good... if you know what their specific purpose is.

Of course we know that success is good, but why? Success is good because it confirms things for us:

  • Success confirms our plans.
  • Success confirms our decisions.
  • Success confirms our resources.
  • Success confirms our strategies.
  • Success confirms our hunches.S
  • uccess confirms our teamwork.
  • Success confirms our risks.
  • Success confirms a lot of things!

So when you are successful, ask yourself the following question: What does this success confirm in my mind?

Now, what about failure? What is the role of failure and how in the world can it be GOOD?

  • Failure's role is to teach us.
  • We learn from failure.
  • Failure teaches us that we need to change our plans.
  • Failure teaches us that we need to change our decisions.
  • Failure teaches us that we need to change our resources.
  • Failure teaches us that we need to change our strategies.
  • Failure teaches us that we need to change our hunches.
  • Failure teaches us that we need to change our teamwork.
  • Failure teaches us that we need to change our risks.
  • Failure teaches us that we need to change a lot of things!

But at least now we know one more thing that won't work! With every failure, we learn one more way we can abandon and focus in on what may be the correct way in the future! When we look at it that way, we set ourselves up for a powerfully successful future! So when you fail, ask yourself this question: What does this failure teach me? Remember; Success and Failure are both good. They can both be your friend... If you know what role they are to play in your life. by Chris Widener

Florida just destroyed Alabama in a doubleheader today, 9-1 and 10-1.

Washington's Danielle Lawrie pitched no-hit ball for the seven regulation innings and another one and one-third extra innings, but her Huskies lost in 11 innings to Stanford, 1-0.

Also in the Bay Area, Cal edged UCLA 7-6. It was a nice recovery for the Golden Bears, who had lost a 9-1, run-rule-shortened game to Washington the day before.

Romantic Love Can Last!

New study disputes notion that passion can't be part of long-term relationships! Although the popular notion is that people in long-term relationships transition from a passionate romance to a comfortable, affectionate partnership, new research suggests that just isn't true.

Reporting in the March issue of the Review of General Psychology, researchers explain that while the manic, obsessive feelings that come with a new love tend to fade over time, romantic love may not. And, for those whose romantic desires remain, their relationships tend to be more satisfying.

"The compulsiveness of early stages of love may not be present in long-term relationships, but you can still feel romantic love, desire, sexual interest for someone you've been with for many, many years," said study author Bianca Acevedo, who was at Stony Brook University in New York at the time of the study.
"Romantic love is achievable, and there are some positive health implications for being in a positive relationship," added Acevedo, who is now a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Acevedo explained that researchers and the media often portray romantic love as something that has to fade over time. But, she said, what researchers have failed to do in the past is to tease apart long-term desire from the obsessive aspect of early relationships.
"In the early stages of a relationship, everything's uncertain, and there's a lot of anxiety that's just not present in long-term relationships. When we assess romantic love apart from the early obsessive aspect, a pattern of satisfaction emerges even more clearly," she said.

They found that romantic love - defined as having intensity, engagement and sexual interest - does exist in long-term relationships. And, they found that the greater the romantic love was, the more satisfied people reported being, whether it was a short-term or long-term relationship. Dr. Virginia Sadock, director of the program in human sexuality and sex therapy at New York University Langone Medical Center, said that romantic love can definitely exist in long-term relationships, but that it takes work. "When one first falls in love - regardless of age - there's a kind of euphoria. Then you get to know them, and realize they have flaws," she said. "But, if you're in a relationship, even though the euphoria is gone, the joy of being in love is still there." If you and your partner have let the spark dim in your relationship, Acevedo suggests trying something "novel and challenging" together. Sadock said that you have to be sure to schedule time alone with each other, and she said, you should try to meet each other in different places. "You want your partner to anticipate your arrival and then actually see you coming. In a relationship, you spend a lot of time next to each other, but not much actually looking at each other," she explained.

And, she also suggested keeping your sexual repertoire varied. "Don't do the same things all the time," she said. Finally, she advised, "If you realize that you haven't had sex for awhile, be aware of it, and do something about it."

Do You Know What Makes You Happy?

Stranger Knows Best: Other People Know More About What Will Make Us Happy Than We Do!
Want to know what will make you happy? Then ask a total stranger - or so says a new study from Harvard University, which shows that another person's experience is often more informative than your own best guess.

The study, which appears in the current March 2009 issue of Science, was led by Daniel Gilbert, professor of psychology at Harvard and author of the 2007 bestseller "Stumbling on Happiness," along with Matthew Killingsworth and Rebecca Eyre, also of Harvard, and Timothy Wilson of the University of Virginia. "If you want to know how much you will enjoy an experience, you are better off knowing how much someone else enjoyed it than knowing anything about the experience itself," says Gilbert. "Rather than closing our eyes and imagining the future, we should examine the experience of those who have been there."

Previous research in psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral economics has shown that people have difficulty predicting what they will like and how much they will like it, which leads them to make a wide variety of poor decisions. Interventions aimed at improving the accuracy with which people imagine future events have been generally unsuccessful.
So rather than trying to improve human imagination, Gilbert and his colleagues sought to eliminate it from the equation by asking people to predict how much they would enjoy a future event about which they knew absolutely nothing - except how much a total stranger had enjoyed it. Amazingly enough, those people made extremely accurate predictions.

In one experiment, women predicted how much they would enjoy a "speed date" with a man. Some women read the man's personal profile and saw his photograph, and other women learned nothing whatsoever about the man, but did learn how much another woman (whom they had never met) had enjoyed dating him. Women who learned about a previous woman's experience did a much better job of predicting their own enjoyment of the speed date than did woman who studied the man's profile and photograph. Interestingly, both groups of women mistakenly expected the profile and photo to lead to greater accuracy, and after the experiment was over both groups said they would strongly prefer to have the profile and photograph of their next date.

In the second experiment, two groups of participants were asked to predict how they would feel if they received negative personality feedback from a peer. Some participants were shown a complete written copy of the feedback. Other were shown nothing, and learned only how a total stranger had felt upon receiving the feedback. The latter group more accurately predicted their own reactions to the negative feedback. Once again, participants mistakenly guessed that a written copy of the feedback would be more informative than knowledge of a total stranger's experience.

"People do not realize what a powerful source of information another person's experience can be," says Gilbert, "because they mistakenly believe that everyone is remarkably different from everyone else. But the fact is that an alien who knew all the likes and dislikes of a single human being would know a great deal about the species. People believe that the best way to predict how happy they will be in the future is to know what their future holds, but what they should really want to know is how happy those who've been to the future actually turned out to be."

Think Without Limits!

By Patrick Driessen

"The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination." - Albert Einstein
"A person is limited only by the thoughts that he chooses." - James Allen

Have you ever thought to what degree you limit your own thinking, imagination and/or ambitions? Do you feel/think you are limited or don’t you have any limitations in your thinking, dreams and the things you want to do and achieve in life?

For most people it is quite common to limit their thinking, however it is most certainly something you can change! It starts with realising that you are not limited to the life you live right now and the things you have achieved so far. Most likely it has been accepted by you as the best you can do at this moment.... True for you? Any time you're ready to go beyond the limitations currently in your life, you're capable of doing that by choosing different thoughts. And then….you can do anything you need if you just believe in it!

Each of us earn the income we do today, since that is the amount we have limited ourselves to earn.... Just think about this one (twice)........; and then realise that we could easily earn 3, 6, or even 12 times more if we did not limit ourselves through the thoughts we maintain!
We have the career position we do today because that is the job position we have limited ourselves to have. We could easily take on a much higher job position if we did not limit ourselves through the thoughts we maintain! Don't believe these two challenging statements above are true? Surely you know people who earn much more than you who don't have your education, your unique skills, your passion or your intelligence. So what makes them different and why do they earn much more than you do? Most likely because they think without limits!

Let me help you to stretch your thinking and clear your thought limits, by giving you a couple of inspiring examples.

A good example of someone who does not limit his own thinking is Sir Richard (Dick) Branson who I met in Sydney when he opened up a new Virgin venture a few weeks ago. He has no thought limits to imagine and aspire how and where to utilise his Virgin brand, so he continues building and starting new business models and companies under his Virgin umbrella. All without limiting his own thoughts!

An example of unlimited thinking in the music industry was given by two fellow Dutchies: singers Ray Slijngaard and Anita Doth had no limits in their thinking. Although they were unknown as artists and came from the unknown music country The Netherlands, they both thought they could concur the world. Backed by two Belgium producers they formed a duo and called themselves “2 Unlimited”. During five years of enormous worldwide popularity their success really had no limits; they scored 16 chart hits and sold more than 20 million records and 50 million compilations worldwide!

A truly inspirational example is the story of George Dantzig from the great book “UNSTOPPABLE” written by Cynthia Kersey (
http://tinyurl.com/d25mv9). As a college student George studied very hard and always late into the night; so late that he overslept one morning, arriving 20 minutes late for mathematics class. He quickly copied the two math problems on the whiteboard, assuming they were the homework assignment for that week. It took him several days to work through the two tough problems, but finally he had a breakthrough and dropped the homework on the professor's desk the next day. A few days later, on a Sunday morning, George was awakened by his excited professor who called him at 6am. Since George was late for class, he hadn't heard the professor announce that the two unsolvable equations on the board were mathematical mind teasers that even Albert Einstein hadn't been able to answer. But George Dantzig, working without any thoughts of limitation, had solved not one, but two problems that had stumped mathematicians for thousands of years! Simply put, George solved the problems because he didn't know he couldn't.

The golden advice is to keep reminding yourself that you have tremendous reservoirs of hidden potential within you, and therefore you are quite capable of doing anything you set your mind to! All you must do is figure out how you can do it, not whether or not you can. And once you have made your mind up to do it, it's amazing how your mind begins to figure out how. It all starts with allowing yourself to change your thinking without limits!

“There are no great limits to growth because there are no limits of human intelligence, imagination, and wonder.” – Ronald Reagan

"Each of us must do massive right thinking, take massive right action and get massive right results, right here, right now." - Mark Victor Hansen

Have fun thinking and succeeding without limits!

Succeeding in Tough Times

"Circumstances break men's bones; it has never been shown that they break men's optimism." - G. K. Chesterton

By Kyle Wilson & Patrick Driessen
I've been noticing (and I'm sure you have to), while many companies and individuals might be struggling right now, that there is also a group of companies and individuals flourishing. I've also noticed there are some common characteristics found in these companies and individuals who seem to be doing well during these uncertain and tough times. Here are five characteristics that stand out:

1) These companies and individuals operate from a win/win philosophy and inherently value their business relationships (customers, employees and vendors). When you understand and appreciate this principle it allows you to create and receive value both on a short and long-term basis, as well as recognise and be in line for new opportunities that begin to present themselves.

2) These companies and individuals have an entrepreneurial mindset. Although, it's true that when a boom is going on, the entrepreneur/manager/leader is often leading the way, I've also noticed that when the water is high (things are going good), everything tends to even out (everyone seems to be doing well). But when it all starts to go south, it is then that entrepreneurs/managers/leaders can rise more quickly and distinguish themselves. They dare to stand out! Their ability to take risks, be decisive, recognise and seize opportunity, focus and to basically "create", allows them to find a way to make things happen!

3) These companies and individuals have an excellent work ethic and focus. In sports, if you were to ask, who in their respective sport has been a dominant figure, three immediately come to my mind - Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretsky. Beyond their remarkable ability and talent, there is also something about these three that help propel them into greatness: their fierce competitiveness and their incredible work ethic. How do you beat the most talented person in the world when they will also out work you and have a "will to win" that is not to be exceeded? Well, the same is true in business. The top performers do not get complacent. They do not rest on their laurels. And they don't decide that because they are doing well or are on top that that is good enough. Their work ethic and drive to be their personal best has allowed previous victories and momentum to carry over into more success (especially in difficult times). In these hectic times of economic crisis with lots of head wind, this is what counts!

4) These companies and individuals have made a commitment to succeed. Making a decision is the prerequisite to all successes. All good things are upstream, but the natural tendency is downstream. Commitment creates the mindset that allows us to face challenges, shut out negative circumstances and discomfort and then move upstream towards our goals!

5) These companies and individuals operate out of faith. Without faith it is impossible to take risk. Without faith it is impossible to make investments of time and effort in the present hoping for a future reward. And without faith it is impossible to make short-term sacrifices on a consistent basis. Faith allows you to be free to give and be your best, knowing that the reward will manifest itself sometime in the future. Faith also allows you to find the opportunity that often comes disguised in the form of a problem or challenge. While others are "missing it" or spending their time and energy complaining, the person/company of faith is identifying and seizing new opportunities!

Question: How do you rate yourself in these five areas above? I would estimate much of where you find yourself today could be directly related to how well you have fared the past few years in regards to the five points above. The good news is: today is a new day, a new start, a new opportunity!

Now is your time, the time to work on yourself, your relationships, your business, etc., and then to attract all the success outcomes you deserve. While you are creating the new you, look at every challenge you might be facing as an opportunity to "create" new and better outcomes!

"For you to be successful, sacrifices must be made. It's better that they are made by others but failing that, you'll have to make them yourself." - Rita Mae Brown

"The truth is that all of us attain the greatest success and happiness possible in this life whenever we use our native capacities to their greatest extent." - Dr. Smiley Blanton

Make this a Positive Day & Fruitful Day…unless you have other plans!

Arguably the best weekend of play thus far this season will be taking place over the next few days. First, take a look at the top teams in the most recent national polls (ESPN.com/USA Softball ranking listed first, USA Today/NFCA listed second).

1/1. Florida (32-2)
2/2. Washington (27-3)
3/3. Stanford (29-1)
4/5. UCLA (24-3)
5/4. Alabama (26-4)

Florida will be hosting Alabama in a three-game SEC series (a Saturday doubleheader, followed by a single game Sunday). Florida's pre-series news release is available here (one does not yet appear available from Alabama).

Way over on the other coast, Stanford hosts UCLA Friday night, and then Washington for single games Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Palo Alto Online offers this article on the Cardinal's weekend challenge.

True, Stanford has lost only once this season. However, the Cardinal has not played any of the nation's top teams thus far (see the team's schedule/results page).

The UCLA and Washington games will thus give us an idea of whether Stanford truly belongs among the nation's elite teams. At the conclusion of this weekend's play, Stanford conceivably could be ranked No. 1 in the nation. But so could any of the other four teams listed above!

Men fall in love in 8.2 seconds!

The time needed for a man to fall in love at first sight is 8.2 seconds, scientists claim.

The longer a man's gaze rests on a woman when they meet for the first time, the more interested he is. If it last just four seconds, he may not be all that impressed. But if it breaks the 8.2 second barrier, he could already be in love they say.
However the same is not true for women. They let their eyes linger on men for the same length of time whether they find them attractive or not.

Hidden cameras were used to secretly track the eye movements of 115 students as they spoke to actors and actresses. They were then asked to rate their conversation partner's attractiveness. The men looked into the eyes of actresses they considered beautiful for an average of 8.2 seconds, but that dropped to 4.5 seconds when gazing at those they rated less attractive, the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior reported.

The female students, however, looked at the actors for the same length of time. The researchers believe that men use eye contact to seek out fit and fertile mates. But women are more wary of attracting unwanted attention because of the risks of unwanted pregnancy and single parenthood.

Spending money 'is like a drug'!

Spending money really is like a drug, scientists have concluded, because it stimulates the reward centres of the brain associated with types of addictive activities. Their research also discovered that people tend to spend more if they have higher salaries – even if prices are correspondingly high. That behaviour has been described for years by economists as the 'money illusion'.

Until now there has been little physiological evidence to back up why the economists' theory appears to work. The study, led by Professor Armin Falk of the University of Bonn, got 18 volunteers to undertake a series of tests looking at how their purchasing decisions varied when given different salaries and product prices. They were given two salary levels, one being 50 per cent higher than the other. However, when they received the higher salary, product prices in a catalogue were also 50 per cent higher. At the same time they underwent brain scans to determine the levels of activity in a part of the brain associated with reward, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex.

A purely logical response would have been for the brain to react identically in both situations. But the scientists found that when people were given a nominally higher salary they felt more rewarded when spending, even though their real purchasing power was the same. Prof Falk concluded: "This result means that reward activation generally increases with income, but was significantly higher in situations where nominal incomes and prices were both 50 per cent higher, which supports the hypothesis that activity in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex is subject to money illusion," Prof Falk added: "Economists have traditionally been sceptical about the notion of money illusion, but recent behavioural evidence has challenged this view."
The study is published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Freddy the Flickertail!

Freddy the Flickertail, the North Dakota State Fair mascot, came out of hibernation today! He helped out around the office by watching over the staff (to make sure they were doing their jobs right) and he filled in for Stacey, who is out due to the stormy weather. He was pretty good at answering phones and helping customers at the window. Freddy couldn't stick around for long, he had a Doctor's appointment with a seamstress, it seems that some kids yanked his tail off during the Fair last year. He had to go under the needle to get a new one sewed on. Don't worry he'll be back to normal in no time at all!

Two Things Leaders Must Do!

"Treasure your relationships, not your possessions." - Anthony J. D'Angelo

"We go where our vision is." - Joseph Murphy

In leadership I see two essential ingredients to DOING: Leaders build relationships and create a shared vision for a better future!

Build Relationships!

Leaders build relationships and ultimately trust by authentically connecting with people, being fully present, and making others feel good about themselves. From the study of Positive Psychology we know positive emotions produce feelings of self-efficacy. Fredrickson’s Broaden and Build Theory and Dutton’s work on high quality connections are evidence for the importance of building relationships. University of Southern California’s professor Warren Bennis sums up the importance of building relationships: “If you think about it, people love others not for who they are, but for how they make us feel. We willingly follow for much the same reason. It makes us feel good to do so.”

Create a Shared Vision
Leadership is about helping people find a shared vision or purpose that not only creates a better future, but also provides meaning in their work. A leader must appeal to a very basic human fear – of the unknown – by transforming confidence in the future. What better way to assuage people’s fears than by defining the future? To quote University of Nebraska professor Bruce Avolio, “Leaders bring the future to the present.” Creating a shared vision, using an Appreciative Inquiry approach, is one way to engage people at all levels of an organization. Buy-in to the vision becomes moot because people have been involved from the start in helping to shape it. Positive Psychology has much to contribute here, including Bandura’s work on visualizing success, and Pratt and Ashforth’s work on meaningfulness in and at work. Meaningful work is central to positive organisations.
What Leaders must KNOW
Leaders must know that higher productivity and innovation, essential to maintaining one’s competitive advantage, can only be achieved through the alignment of strengths and requires leadership at all levels in an organisation.
Alignment of Strengths
Most organisations take their employees’ strengths for granted and focus on minimising weaknesses or closing gaps. This is not how excellence and competitive advantage are built. Positive Psychology has much empirical evidence to support a strength-based leadership approach. We’ve learned if you can carve out roles that draw upon your strengths everyday, you will be more productive, fulfilled, and successful. Assessment tools, like Gallup’s Strengths Finder and Seligman/Peterson’s VIA Signature Strengths, can help a leader identify, understand, and leverage her strengths. Only then can a leader truly appreciate and leverage the strengths of others.

Leaders At All Levels

I believe everyone has the potential to be a leader. I’m reminded of a quote from Ralph Nader: “I start with the premise that the function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.” Positive Psychology has taught us that by discovering one’s natural talents or strengths we can apply these gifts in our life and in service of others. Mike Morrison, Dean of Toyota University, in his book Leading Through Meaning, describes how today’s competitive realities require leadership at all levels, not merely reserving leadership to a few at the top.

What Leaders must BE
Leadership is truly a way of being. If you have the ingredients in the first two domains, but ignore the being domain, I do not believe you can be an effective leader. I see two essential ingredients to being: Leadership is about being authentic and being optimistic of the future.

Authentic
Who we are being as leaders begins with “knowing thyself”. The fields of Positive Psychology and Organizational Development offer a number of assessment tools to assist in this discovery. I believe leadership starts from the inside and goes outward and authenticity is the fundamental stating point of Leadership. Authenticity is discovered and highlighted through ongoing feedback, reflection, and action. This is where an executive coach can add the most value. If a leader wants to change an organization I believe she must start by changing herself. As Gandhi said, “You must be the change you seek in the world.”

Optimistic
Leadership is about inspiring hope for a better future. Positive Psychology has much to offer around hope theory and optimism. While some leaders are blessed with a dispositional optimistic style, others can learn “to be” more optimistic by knowing their explanatory style and changing their behavior through such techniques as disputing, reframing, and active-constructive responding. Researchers have found that optimistic people are more successful, healthier, and happier. Imagine applying this concept now to organizations. Is there a contagion effect when the leader is optimistic? What role does optimism play in realizing a shared vision? I believe optimism is essential to being an effective leader and creating a shared vision. Without it, there is no hope, no reason to stretch, and no belief that an organisation can rally to achieve its vision. - By Margaret Greenberg

Build Relationships, Create a Shared Vision, Alignment of Strengths, Leaders at all Levels, Authentic, Energetic and Optimistic!

12 Reasons People Fail and are Less Successful

How often have you asked yourself what kept you from succeeding? What caused you to fail?
Below are 12 common causes that prevent people to succeed. I'm sure these will help you to stretch your own thinking and enable you to find and create new ways to succeed in a faster, better and more satisfying way!

1. They never define what wealthy means to them.
How much money do you need to live the lifestyle you desire?
2. Their goals aren’t really goals but a moving target they’ll never hit.
This is what I need to do, this too, this too, oh and this too. Too many goals.
3. Set goals they’ll never hit or impossible to achieve.
When someone says, “The Sky is the Limit!”, they mean it. The more the better and they’ll never be satisfied.
4. Don’t believe it can be done and never start.
There is too much competition already. It’ll be too hard to do and I don’t have enough time. I wish I could but I can’t.
5. Don’t make it a must.Making it a must is more than just making it a priority.
You have to do it and it becomes essential to your survival. Just like food and water.
6. They don’t create a realistic plan.
They think or assume they can be successful but do no real research or planning. They just start and “wing it” hoping everything works out.
7. Don’t follow through with the plan.
Why even create a plan for success if you’re not going to follow it? It’s like making a grocery list and not bringing it with you — you’ll probably forget something.
8. Give others responsibility to make things work.
If you give someone responsibility you need to make sure they’re taking care of things. If they fail - you fail!
9. Give up when facing a difficult challenge.
When facing a difficult challenge it’s easy to quit. Don’t quit until you achieve your goals!
10. They fail to conduct their life like a business.
You should be conducting your life like a business. At the end of the year you need to show profit and not debt. A successful business is showing profits at the end of the year and not increased debt.
11. They allow others optimism or pessimism to effect or control their decisions.
If someone tells you that it’s too late to make money on the internet are you going to believe them? How about if they tell you that you can make $1,000 a day without doing anything and just a little money using the Forex Autopilot software that sells for only $400? Do your research and make your own decision!
12. No quality coaching.
In order to effectively realise your own goals and stay motivated, the help of a qualified coach or influence is essential to your success! Raising a well mannered child requires great parenting. In this analogy you are the child and your coach is the parent.

Something else to remember:
“The purpose of a goal is not the goal itself, but what it makes of you along the way.” - Tony Robbins
“You can do anything you need if you just believe in it.” - Patrick Driessen

Have fun creating and enjoying your own success!

What's Your Career Plan B?

By Patrick Driessen

"The most successful people are those who are good at plan B." - James Yorke

Adaptability, flexibility, diversity, creativity, self knowledge, relationships, vision and focus are some of the most critical ingredients to succeed your career in these hectic times.

As part of my focus on career coaching, I often ask my team members, coachees, friends and other people I meet: "What's your career Plan B?".

I'll explain what kind of Plan B I'm referring to:

  • What is your Plan B if you'd lose your current job tomorrow?
  • What is your Plan B if you can no longer continue your career within the same company, the same type of role and the same kind of industry?
  • What is your Plan B if you were being asked to sell yourself into an entirely different profession?
  • What is your Plan B to take on a role at least 3 levels higher?
  • What is your Plan B to increase your income with 5, 10 or even 20 times?
  • What is your Plan B if you lose your own income and now your spouse/partner will become responsible for generating an income?
With these kind of questions I not only motivate them to stretch their own thinking, it often makes them realise they currently do not have a solid Plan B. How will you succeed if you're not thinking ahead, exploring opportunities and creating a Plan B with options, alternative strategies and actions you can execute at any point in time?

A couple of recent examples in response to some of the Plan B questions I raised:
  • One of my coachees was focused on selling himself into a similar senior leadership role within the same organisation he worked for. I asked him: "What if there is no demand for your role in other areas? Are there any other roles/functions you can sell yourself into?" After allowing him to think and when I stretched his thinking even further, he came up with two new leadership role types he was perfectly qualified for! This allowed him to broaden his scope in finding and securing his next leadership career challenge!
  • At a recent introduction meeting with one of the preferred executive recruiters my company is working together with, I kindly asked the female recruiter: "What would your Plan B look like, if as of tomorrow you could not be a recruiter anymore and the recruitment business would no longer exist?". In first instance she responded: "I would try to find a similar recruitment role somewhere else." I reminded her that in this Plan B scenario that would not be possible; no more recruitment! I raised some more thinking questions to get her out of her comfort zone. She than cleared her mind and started thinking.... Soon she responded with her draft Plan B: "Based on my other qualifications, skills and experience, I think can make a healthy living by becoming a certified NLP coach, a certified personal trainer, a HR consultant or even a salsa dance teacher!" She really got excited about her new Plan B; it made her grow & glow!
  • When meeting various friends for drinks, I asked the wife of one of my friends: "How can you generate an income if your husband would lose his job and could not find another job?" She responded very upset: "How am I supposed to get a job and work full-time, while raising three children, doing the household and a thousand other jobs?" I challenged her by giving her new insights on how to think without limits. Then I raised a couple of other Plan B type questions and agreed to ask her for her Plan B in a week time. Within four days she called me... She sincerely thanked me for stimulating her to create her Plan B. She was super excited! She had created a Plan B which was based on starting her own business from home, based on a business idea she had for a long time. She was so passionate and excited about her plan B, that she already had found a girlfriend who was willing and able to start the business together with her. And....her husband would do the marketing! She assured me that even when her husband would not lose his job, she most likely would go ahead with her Plan B!

Of course I've challenged myself on my own career Plan B's. This is what I've came up with so far: besides offering my skills, experience & services as a senior executive leader in various areas, and selling myself as a certified coach and executive mentor, I think I could sell myself as a business & strategy consultant, a certified fire fighter, a certified paramedic officer, start various new businesses as entrepreneur/investor, become a book author, play drums in a band and someday maybe even sell my own paintings for a good price..... All great ingredients for a number of compelling and flexible Plan B's! The ingredients of my other more ambitious Plan B I'll keep to myself....because that's the main plan I'll be focused on over the next 5 years.

My advise is to create various plans and they should cover all career scenario's: worst case, normal case, best case!

So....What's YOUR Plan B?

Make this a Positive & Fruitful day....unless you have other plans!

Warm regards & success with creating your own Plan B,
